Update: Apple offers advice for iPhone 4 antenna issues 5:48 pm PT
There have been a lot of reports from users of Apple’s new iPhone 4 that the antenna suddenly drops when you hold it in your hands, but nobody has been able to nail down the cause yet. (more…)
Some of those that received their iPhone 4 before today’s official launch have complained about screen discoloration. Specifically, a yellow blotch on the bottom of the screen is showing up on some phones. However, the discoloration may not be permanent or a defect with the phone. In fact, it could be a problem resulting from how quick Apple is manufacturing and shipping the phones.
Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow “blotches” will disappear. How do I know? I was involved in pitching Z-6011 to Apple.

People are reporting screen defects on their new iPhone 4 as shipments of the device begin arriving to customers. According to Gizmodo, 27 people that received their iPhones are reporting the problem. That’s hardly widespread, but the majority of iPhones won’t be delivered or picked up until tomorrow. It’s going to be an interesting day.

RSS readers are popular items on the iPad as news hounds look for the perfect way to get stories from their favorite sites quickly and easily. I’ve been using NewsRack for the iPad and am very happy with it, but the buzz these days is all about Reeder. The app scored very high in the review and most everyone I’ve talked to enjoys it.
Finding the perfect feed reader is more complicated than it might at first appear. Finding the right one for the iPad has proven even more challenging. There’s a delicate balance that must be achieved between style and substance, between the practical and the visually enticing. Developer Silvio Rizzi’s Reeder for iPad may straddle that fine line better than other readers out there, but it’s still not perfect.

The numbers are in and Apple sold approximately 37,500 iPads per day since it was released on April 3. So many people said there wasn’t market for the iPad. If not, there are a lot of people that are wrong, because sales are increasing, not decreasing.

Apple’s iPhone 4 is not scheduled to ship until Thursday, but retail boxes are already beginning to show up on store shelves. The picture on Engadget gives no indication which model is on the shelf, but clearly it’s a new iPhone 4. I wonder if shipments to customers will come out a day early or maybe they will remain on schedule and ship Thursday.

Google on Monday updated its Gmail service for users of Apple’s iPad. Of particular note is Google’s use of the larger screen real-estate available on the iPad. The new email compose window is much larger, allowing users much more room to type and navigate through the Web app.
While Apple (AAPL) is the clear leader in the large touch screen device space, the new functionality of Google’s (GOOG) Gmail will be a worthy addition to all larger touch screen devices, especially those running Google’s own Android OS, which are expected to debut en mass later this year.

I was amazed when I read the Guitar Hero review from our friends at 148Apps.com. Not only did the game not live up to the hype of years of great console releases, the review said the game wasn’t worth the wait and that it was just disappointing. You would think Activision would have been able to do better with this release, but it still probably won’t stop a lot of people from buying it.
The interface is cramped and never feels comfortable on neither an iPhone-sized device nor on the iPad running in 2X mode. As well, the new sliding mechanic, while it takes time to get used to, never stops feels like it was merely inserted to differentiate the game on the iPhone from other platforms’ versions, and it doesn’t add to the entertainment value or authenticity of the game.

With the release of iOS 4 imminent, developers are racing to make any necessary changes to have their apps compatible with the new operating system. Just as important, developers are also trying to take advantage of the new features available to them in iOS 4. Skype is one of those companies — it posted a note on its Web site that said it was doing some additional tests and would release it when they’re “confident that the app will live up to your high expectations.”

Okay, we all know that AT&T’s wireless service is not very good in many areas of the U.S., so they have come up with a way for customers to improve that. They will sell you a Micro-Cell for $150, which basically fills in coverage gaps of its service. However, the Micro-Cell uses your broadband connection, which you pay for separately, to get to the Micro-Cell.
It’s counting any mobile data you use — over the 3G Micro-Cell, over YOUR broadband connection — toward your monthly AT&T wireless bandwidth cap and overage fees. For AT&T to charge its wireless customers a second time for bandwidth that they’re already paying their broadband company for is highway robbery and just plain insulting. In reality, AT&T should be paying YOU for the bandwidth it’s borrowing to make up for the fact that it can’t build out its wireless network fast enough.
