∞ Why haven't more people joined Adobe's Flash fight? Because consumers don't care

Adobe has some of the best apps on the market today, but when it comes to getting Flash on a consumer device like the iPhone, the company’s cries for solidarity seem to be falling on deaf ears. (more…)

∞ Apple updates MacBook

Apple added a speed boost and longer battery life to its MacBook line of computers on Tuesday as the company quietly released an update to the notebooks. The price remains the same at $999. Looks like a good time to pick up a MacBook.

The new MacBook now has a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of memory. The notebook has a 250GB hard drive and boasts battery-life of 10 hours, up from the seven hour battery of the previous model. The MacBook is also now using the NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics card, the newest mobile card from the company.

∞ Google facing investigations for data harvesting

After admitting to collecting data from Wi-Fi networks, Google could find itself at the center of investigations in both Germany and the U.S. The data was being collected by the cars Google uses for its mapping service, which also collected Wi-Fi addresses and snippets of data.

“This may be one of the most massive surveillance incidents by a private corporation that has ever occurred”, said Marc Rotenberg, leader of the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Centre in Washington.“It is unprecedented vacuuming of WiFi data by a private company. Can you imagine what would happen if a German corporation was sending cars through Washington sucking up all this information?”

∞ Apple vs. Adobe: Using "Wisdom of Crowds" to track the battle

The ongoing battle between Apple and Adobe began to heat up earlier this year after it became clear that the iPad would not support Flash. The two companies brought the fight to the public in recent weeks, and I wanted to try a different approach to track how people feel about each of them, using the Wisdom of Crowds principle. (more…)

∞ Gizmodo legal roundup: Lam email, Jobs on the phone, hiding evidence

What a day it has been. After the news that the judge would unseal documents related to the iPhone 4G and Gizmodo, everyone waited to see what would happen. There were more than a few surprises and some juicy tidbits that came out late today. First, here are a couple of choice quotes from the articles and then links to some of the better stories out there. (more…)

∞ Judge unseals search warrant documents in Gizmodo case

This case is about to get a lot more interesting. San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Clifford Cretan ordered the documents in the Gizmodo iPhone 4G case unsealed on Friday. The judge said he read the affidavit and there is no confidential informant. Media organizations that banded together to ask for the documents to be unsealed include Wired.com, the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times and CNET.

Cretan said he only agreed to to seal the document in the first place because it involved a fast-moving, active investigation, and because “the warrant involved possible intrusion into media sources,” said the judge. “Which is ironic. Now it’s media seeking to open things up.”The judge added that information contained in the affidavit has already emerged in the press. Last month Wired.com reported that 21-year-old Brian J. Hogan, of Redwood City, California, was the one who came into possession of the prototype iPhone at an area bar, and passed it to Gizmodo in exchange for a payment.

∞ Adobe brings an ad to a gunfight with Apple

We all saw Adobe’s new ad campaign launched yesterday with the tagline, “We Love Apple,” which not-so-subtly tries to get people on its side in the battle with Apple over Flash. MG Siegler wrote a great post yesterday that drew me in right away with a funny headline.

You’ve just spent God-knows how much money on an ad buy that blankets much of the technology press (including this site). It’s a strange passive-aggressive message that just makes Jobs’ aggressive-aggressive post from a few weeks ago seem even more forceful. And it’s transparent. But worst of all, it won’t work. You must know this.On the face of it, the ad is an attempt to convince people that you’re the good guys in this fight. “We Love Apple” — the problem is, you don’t love Apple. Why on Earth would you? They’re completely screwing you right now. Everyone knows that. You’d have to be crazy to love Apple right now.

∞ Jobs responds to why Apple dropped Mac from Design Awards

Apple CEO Steve Jobs responded to an email from a developer on why the Mac was dropped from this year’s WWDC Apple Design Awards. Jobs responded saying this was “just the normal cycle of things” and that Apple was focusing on the iPhone OS. Certainly makes sense with all of the mobile products Apple has and will put in 2009/2010.

∞ C4 Mac developer conference dies

Sad news today from Jonathan “Wolf” Rentzsch, the organizer of the C4 developer conference — the event is dead. I never attended any of the C4 conferences, but I know a lot of developers who did and they really enjoyed it. Anytime a conference that gets developers together to share ideas and discuss the current market conditions dies, we all suffer.

Rentzsch cites Apple’s recent alteration of Section 3.3.1 of its iPhone developer agreement—the controversial clause that prohibits the use of some tools and programming languages for creating iPhone applications—as the straw that broke the camel’s back. Specifically, he points to the lack of developer outrage about the change, saying “unlike previous issues such as the senseless iPhone SDK NDA, the majority of the community isn’t riled by 3.3.1.”

∞ David Letterman switching to the Mac

Dave is making a change in his computer of choice, moving from a PC to a Mac. The reason, it seems, is the same reason many users have switched over the years: malware, spam and viruses. The computer discussion was part of last night’s show, but I suppose we have no way of knowing for sure whether he is actually using a new Mac. If he was smart he would.

Big switch in Dave’s computer world. He’s making the change from the PC to the MAC. He’s complaining of getting too much unwanted spam and cookies and gummie bears and e-mails about pills that can grow parts of your anatomy. Paul chimes, “They don’t work!” Dave says the only thing he can get on his computer right now is the current time.

∞ Hearing scheduled to unseal records in Gizmodo iPhone case

Media organizations including CNET, AP and Bloomberg are asking San Mateo County Judge, Clifford Cretan, to unseal records about the police investigation into Gizmodo. Documents the media are looking for include the search warrant that was issued, allowing police to search Gizmodo editor Jason Chen’s house.

The San Mateo County district attorney is opposing the request. In an four-page legal brief (PDF), prosecutors say the media’s First Amendment right does not “outweigh the rights of the people to protect the identity of persons who may have provided information to law enforcement in confidence during the initial stages of the investigation.”

∞ Toy Story 3 Flash Web site design, not so good for the iPad

Steve Jobs did say that Flash was a PC technology, so it probably doesn’t matter that the Toy Story 3 Web site is built using the technology. However, considering Steve’s distain for the technology on Apple’s portable devices and taking into account his position at Disney, you would think that some effort would have been made to make the site work with the iPad.

You can add Pixar’s own site to the list too. It also doesn’t do well on the iPad.

∞ Game designer American McGee likes the iPad

American McGee, formerly of Id Software (makers of Quake and Doom) is a well-respected game designer in his own right, with a string of titles that bear his name, including “American McGee’s Alice,” a trippy retake on the classic Alice in Wonderland story that was brought to the Mac. Now he’s turning his attention to the iPhone and iPad with “American McGee’s Crooked House.” In an interview, McGee called the iPhone platform “truly refreshing” and says he and others in his company – Shanghai, China-based Spicy Horse (and its iPhone-specific subsidiary, Spicy Pony) – are looking forward to developing for iPad.
