Jim Dalrymple: I am retiring

This is the most difficult, but at the same time, the most exciting story I have ever written. After almost 30 years of reporting on Apple, I am retiring.

I guess the biggest question is what happens to The Loop. Daily posts will stop, but the site will remain online, and we’ll use it to host The Dalrymple Report podcast, which Dave and I have decided to keep going. I may be officially retired, but I still have things to say and opinions to give.

Over the past couple of years, I have taken time to address issues in my personal life. In that time, I realized that there is so much more to life than work—I’ll be honest, that revelation came as a massive shock to me, but I couldn’t be happier.

From the early days at MacCentral in 1994, then to MacWorld in 1999, and starting The Loop in 2009, I have always tried to be honest in my reporting. I look back at my career with satisfaction and pride, knowing that I did the best I could.

If you currently pay $3.00 a month for The Loop, you can continue that to help support the podcast—we would certainly appreciate it. If not, you can cancel your account through PayPal or you can email me and I’ll help you out.

I made many friends throughout my journey and people who have helped me over the years. Peter Cohen, John Gruber, and Jason Snell, to name just a few, are great people that I leaned on for advice and support. I spent years being a guest on Shawn King’s weekly podcast and Shawn helped on The Loop too. So many great people.

The one person that made the most significant difference for me is Dave Mark. You all know Dave from his posts on The Loop and my partner on the podcast, but he is so much more than that. Dave isn’t just a co-worker; he’s not just a friend; he is like a brother to me. His work on The Loop and podcast has been excellent, but his continued support has meant the world to me. Cheers, Dave!

I have to thank my family for all of their support over the years—it is because of them I was so successful. Helping to start an online business in 1994 wasn’t exactly the thing to do at the time, but with the support of my ex-wife and kids, it happened and thrived. Thank you!

So, what’s next?

My fiancé, Erika, has accepted a job that has us moving from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas and I couldn’t be happier. We purchased a house on five acres of land outside of Austin and are moving this week.

I am looking forward to taking more time to play guitar again. I haven’t played much in the past couple of years, but I’m going to fix that very soon. I’ll serenade all the wildlife on my land with some Ozzy songs.

I will also be cooking a lot more, a hobby I picked up this past year that I find very satisfying. Homemade pasta and sauces are my specialties right now, but I’ll be expanding my menu in the next year.

I have to thank Erika for her unwavering love and support throughout all of these changes—she has been amazing. I can’t imagine what I would do without her strength and wisdom. We are getting married in May and I’m looking forward to our life together.

You can follow Dave and I on Twitter—we’ll still be active there.

So, there it is. Thanks to everyone for reading; I appreciate you all.

Jim Dalrymple and iMore present Beard Bash 2016 at WWDC

The Beard Bash has become an annual event at WWDC, and it has been wildly successful for the last four years. This year, in conjunction with iMore, we are building on that success and we’re stepping it up a few notches.

First, we’ve moved the party to The Mezzanine in San Francisco, one of the city’s finest live music venues. We will also have two bands this year. The party will kick off with a San Francisco staple of rock music, The Department of Rock. This band is a lot of fun and they have an incredible setlist.

The party’s headlining band will be familiar to many of you: Airplane Mode, an indie rock band from New York City. Known for their heavy use of Apple products on-stage, founding members (Dave Wiskus and Joe Cieplinski) have strong ties to the iOS developer community.

The party will be on Monday, June 13, 2016 from 8:00-11:00 pm and we will have free beer and wine available. You must be 21 to attend, and you will be asked to show ID at the door.

Unlike previous years, we will not be sending out invitations for the party. Instead, we will be opening up the invite list to everyone. You will have to RSVP and show that at the door. So, if you’re attending WWDC and want to attend the party, you’re welcome to come. We’ll be opening the RSVP list later this week, so be prepared to sign-up quickly.

We have a couple of great sponsors for this years Beard Bash including Pixelmator, along with MacPaw, and of course, iMore. We thank them for their support for this fun event.

We hope you’ll attend the party and enjoy a few of the surprises that are in store for you.

Diary of a Mad Man:

My close personal friend, Jim Darlymple, was down in Austin, Texas this past week attending the SXSW iTunes Music Festival. He apparently had a great time.

Except for that time when that guy stole his guitar. I watched the video, fully expecting to see Jim beat the guy to death with his own arm.

The Dalrymple Report: Apple Holiday ads, OpenAI, and Apple’s hardware goals

It’s that time of year again—Apple is starting to put out its holiday ads, which are typically some of the best on TV. Dave and I take a look at this year’s Thanksgiving ad, as well as some of our favorite Apple ads of all time. We also talk about the debacle at OpenAI as their co-founder and CEO got ousted this week. In addition we look at Apple’s hardware goals for the next few years and see what’s in store for consumers.

The Dalrymple Report: iPads, Apple TV, and Apple Watch ad

It was a big week for iPad lovers as Apple introduced two new devices, one entry-level and one iPad Pro. The problem seems to be that there is some confusion with the lower-end model receiving features that many expected to be in the pro version. Dave and I also talk about the new Apple TV and a really good Apple Watch Ultra commercial.

This and a lot more on this week’s episode.

The Dalrymple Report: Apple Music ads and WWDC

Apple Music recently started placing 40 second ads in its genre based radio stations, as well as in some of its playlists. Apple promotes the service as being ad-free, which it clearly no longer is. Dave and I also talk about next week’s WWDC and some of the things we think you will see at the event.

Counterpoint to Jim’s issues with Apple Music

If you have not yet read it, take a few minutes to read Jim Dalrymple’s heartfelt critique of Apple Music, iTunes Match, and Apple’s embrace of Hip-Hop.

I do agree with a lot of Jim’s thesis, especially his points about iTunes Match and Apple exclusives. Rock and metal seem to have become second class citizens there.

That said, I have become more and more a fan of the overall Apple Music experience, warts and all. I love being able to share music with my kids via our family plan. There’s hardly a song I can think of that I can’t find on Apple Music. My kids share what they love, which keeps me up on newer music, and I get to share the roots music that informed and influenced the music they love.

I think Apple Music’s DNA is broadening, not narrowing. Though I do agree that Apple exclusives tend to be star-centric, with focus on trying to sign deals with the biggest names, that makes business sense.

But Apple Music is not abandoning other flavors of music. As I write this, I have Metallica’s newest (Hardwired to Self-Destruct) blasting direct from Apple Music to my MacBook Pro’s speakers.

As I make my way through the new releases on Apple Music, I see Disturbed: Live at Red Rocks, Sixx:A.M.’s Prayers for the Blessed, both mixed in with plenty of pop, jazz, country and, yes, plenty of hip-hop. That said, Jim’s point is certainly well taken. There’s way more hip-hop/rap than rock. The trend is clear.

I see this as a bit of a pendulum. The most highly represented music is driven by the personal tastes of the people running the show. That makes sense. Before Beats entered the equation, the pendulum swung the other way.

And with all that said, I hope that the folks at the top will read Jim’s editorial and take it to heart. The choices made with iTunes Match and Apple Music exclusives do matter. Don’t let your own personal tastes limit the Apple Music experience for those folks who skew different.

The Dalrymple Report: How Am I Going to Top That?

Jonathan Mann (no relation) joins Jim to talk about writing a new song every day, the recording process, and what it’s like to have Steve Jobs play your video at a keynote.
