∞ Google's Android isn't so 'open' anymore
Google won over a lot of major companies by using the term “open” when describing its Android mobile operating system. Many are now finding out that “open” was more of a bait and switch. (more…)

Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Communications, Allison Johnson, is leaving the company. She is apparently leaving to start a marketing firm — seems kind of odd to me, but everyone has different priorities. John Paczkowski has the scoop on the story this morning, so head over there to get all the information.
At Apple, Johnson has managed global advertising for some of the company’s most revolutionary products and the iconic ads for them. Those ads have been created by TBWA\Chiat\Day, which plays a powerful role at Apple.

I used to buy a new phone every couple of months. As soon as the newest cool thing came out, I had to have it. For the past four years, I haven’t found anything that could outdo my iPhone, but I still like to read about the latest and greatest. BGR’s Jonathan Geller posted his detailed review of the HTC ThunderBolt.
The HTC ThunderBolt is a phone from the future in many ways. It delivers the fastest internet speeds of any device I have ever tested (at least 2-3 times faster than anything else, in fact), and it runs on a very fast (and customized) version of Android to deliver great performance. In many ways, however, the ThunderBolt resembles phones from a year or two ago — in styling and in thickness and heft.

Writing for AdAge.com, Nat Ives reports that Popular Science magazine has sold 10,000 subscriptions to its iPad edition. That represents only a small fraction of the magazine’s overall subscriber base (1.2 million), but it’s the first hard number we’ve seen showing how Apple’s new subscription service is working. Joe Wilcox says he’ll kiss Steve Ballmer’s feet if Windows Phone is No. 2 in the market by 2015. Wilcox is referring to a report by IDC earlier today that Windows Phone 7 will overtake iOS, thanks to Nokia. Joe doesn’t believe Windows and Nokia can pull it off, which is why he makes such a bold statement. It would be funny to see though.
The market is too volatile and fast-changing. IDC’s 2014 smartphone OS forecast, released little more than six months ago, is evidence enough. Then the analyst firm predicted that iOS share would fall to 10.9 percent by 2014, for a 25.8 percent decline. Since, iPhone 4 proved to be hugely successful and Verizon started distributing the smartphone.

It’s nice when the old guard passes along some tips for the upcoming developers. Sometimes. Mark Dalrymple (no relation that I know of), a long time developer and author, put together 10 things for first-time developers to make sure they get the most out of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. It’s a great read. If you’ve been to a WWDC or any conference, you’ll get a good laugh.
Follow proper Labs etiquette. The labs where you can chat with Apple engineers are an invaluable resource. It is a scarce, shared resource, so treat it like you would computationaly: pretend to be a mutex. You walk into the lab you want and shout “I AM ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN A LOCK ON THE MEDIA PLAYER FRAMEWORK ENGINEERS”. If an engineer is free, you’ll hear “LOCK SUCCEDED” from the back, and you can go to the engineer who just shouted and ask your questions. If no one responds wait until you time out, and try again. Expert tip: “spinlock”.
