∞ Gruber, ice water, hell, and Windows 8

Here’s a lesson for people that want to write for a living or even for a hobby — if you are going to quote somebody to make your point, make sure they actually said what you claim they do. Time Techland’s Jared Newman made the mistake of wrongly quoting Daring Fireball’s John Gruber and Macworld’s Jason Snell in a recent article and Gruber sets the record straight.

Here are a few excerpts from Gruber — you can just tell Newman got it wrong:

[Disdain] is utterly the wrong word
bear no resemblance to anything Snell or I actually wrote
Neither Snell nor I wrote anything resembling that
neither Snell nor I described the iPad
What I wrote is
And people in hell want ice water

It’s just a classic article. A must read.

∞ iPads, iPhones make inroads in government

U.S. government agencies have long been bastions of the RIM BlackBerry, thanks to RIM’s secure e-mail service and the government’s need to do careful security and recordkeeping. But that’s changing. Even President Obama has been seen carrying an iPad, and now some government employees are using iPhones.

“The flashy consumer products that have been adopted in the corporate workforce — upending BlackBerrys for iPhones, Microsoft Outlook for Gmail, and lately laptops for iPads — are now invading the federal government. The State Department. The Army. The Department of Veterans Affairs. NASA. The General Services Administration is in the process of moving 17,000 employees onto Gmail.”

∞ Apple close to deal for iTunes cloud music

Talks have progressed because music industry insiders are said to be hopeful that a cloud streaming service, which would allow users to access their music from any Internet-connected device, will boost sagging music sales. This way, users would be able to listen to a large library of tracks without having to sync songs to various devices.

This is great news. I’m more interested in Apple’s implementation of music in the cloud than anything else.
