I don’t care anymore whether people know that Instapaper defined the read-later service and was first to most of its core features. I don’t care anymore whether people know how much Read It Later copied from Instapaper in our early years. You can’t force people to know backstories.

But for Pocket to repeatedly state the opposite — that they were the first service like this, and that Instapaper followed their lead — is over the line, and I won’t sit here quietly and let that go unchallenged.

The man responsible for several leaks on Microsoft’s upcoming console, codenamed Durango, has had his home raided by the Australian police and an FBI agent.

People are so stupid.

I hope Google tells the winners what to do when a company like Google calls and demands a story be changed.

Congrats to the winners.

TextWrangler 4.5 now Retina-ready, adds new Go menu

Bare Bones Software on Thursday announced the release of an update to their free text editor for OS X, TextWrangler. The new 4.5 release is now available for download from their Web site or through the Mac App Store.

Highlights of the new release include support for Macs equipped with “Retina” displays. A new Go menu has been added, along with a new Compare Against Previous Version command, and more.

The Go menu helps users navigate with a document more easily by providing ways to hop to Jump Point, Function, Line Number and Center Line locations. Compare Against Previous Version uses OS X’s built-in file versioning to compare active documents with previously stored versions. That new function requires Lion or later.

Also new are additional command keystroke equivalents, new keyboard navigation adjustments, other refinements and fixes.

As always, TextWrangler is free. We swear by TextWrangler’s big brother, BBEdit, so if you’re looking for a powerful and free text editing and transformation tool, by all means get yourself over to Bare Bones’ Web site and download it.

Avadon 2: The Corruption role playing game announced for Mac, iPad

Spiderweb Software on Thursday revealed plans to release Avadon 2: The Corruption, a fantasy role playing game for Mac, Windows and iPad. It’s coming this Fall.

Developed by the makers of the Avernum and Exile series, Avadon 2 is part of an all-new series. You return to Avadon, the Black Fortress. You are tasked with putting an end to the civil war that threatens your land. A shadowy menace threatens to destroy your land, and it’s up to you to either joining forces with it and ending Avadon’s power or fighting your enemies and restoring Avadon to its former glory.

You choose from five different character classes, dozens of spells and abilities, dungeons to explore, magical artifacts to collect and use, and many different branching storylines, endings and side quests.

Editor’s note: Spiderweb Software makes classic RPGs, and does a fantastic job with them. If you have love in your heart for games like the Ultima series for Apple II and the original Baldur’s Gate, you will love Spiderweb’s games. They’re deep, they’re immersive, they’re loads of fun and for the amount of gameplay you get, they’re worth every penny. I’ve never been disappointed with any Spiderweb game I’ve played.

Nintendo and Sony once held a lock on the mobile gaming industry, but Google and Apple have cracked that wide open with their respective mobile operating systems. A new joint report from IDC and App Annie claims that combined spending on games in the App Store and Google Play in the fourth quarter 2012 was higher than the amount spent on dedicated handheld devices.

Just a couple of years ago this would have been inconceivable.

Om Malik:

I surfed through a few websites — and clicked on a lot of ads, unintentionally. I used Google Maps and Google Photos and used touch to experience them. I am guessing that there is a growing number of people who want touch on their laptops — I simply use the iPad for all things cloud.

That said, I have some reservations about the device and its positioning. It is hard to pay $1,299 for a device when I can get a better-equipped MacBook Air, which despite its age is a lot more flexible and expandable. Pichai said that he wanted to focus on the high end of the market because they want power users, early adopters and developers to embrace this platform.

Om has a lot of good points in his article — it’s definitely worth a read. I especially like that he argues with Google about it.

Dave Lombardo:

“So that you all know the truth, as of the end of the business day on February 14th, I was notified that I would not be drumming for the tour in Australia. I’m saddened, and to be honest I am shocked by the situation.”

Wow.

That was the one-word answer given by Apple (AAPL) chairman Arthur D. Levinson when asked to describe his experience running the company’s board of directors since Steve Jobs’s death. Levinson, who joined the board in 2000, was a colleague and close friend to Apple’s legendary founder and CEO. On Tuesday, he said that Jobs’s absence remains tough to ignore even as the company has continued introducing new products and making fresh announcements.

Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition finally coming to Mac Feb 22

After numerous delays, Beamdog and Overhaul Games announced Wednesday plans to release Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for OS X. You can pre-order and pre-load it today from Beamdog’s Web site; it’ll also be available for download from the Mac App Store. Either way, it’ll cost $20.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is a rework of the classic computer role playing game originally developed by Bioware and released in the late 1990s. Baldur’s Gate won legions of fans for its intricate and detailed gameplay, which followed the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rule set and incorporated scenarios in the AD&D Forgotten Realms setting.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition arrives complete with added content, new character classes and other changes. The game has already been released for iOS and Windows, but this will mark the OS X debut. (The iPad version is available for $10, but offers additional content only unlockable using in-app purchases. The Mac version arrives fully equipped.)

A nice looking utility for your Mac.

iPhone 5 becomes the world’s best-selling smartphone

Here it is: the fourth and final piece of the Ubuntu puzzle. We’ve seen the OS on smartphones, on TVs and of course on desktops, but the tablet version has spent a little longer in its dressing room. Fortunately, Canonical feels that the last stage in its four-screen strategy is now ready for the limelight and has released a video of the software in action.

Ubuntu is coming to smartphones, and now to tablets too. At least if you have a Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 tablet, that is, for a preview build that’s coming shortly. It’s a safe bet that it’ll be a while (sometime into 2014) before tablets start rolling off the assembly line with Ubuntu installed, however.
