∞ Apple emphasizes size, quantity in new Upper West Side store

New York City residents in the vicinity of the Upper West Side get their own Apple Store on Saturday, Nov. 14th when Apple’s newest retail location opens at 1981 Broadway (at 67th Street). There are a few surprises in store that set this store apart from other New York locations, according to Apple.

∞ Safari 4.0.4 improves JavaScript performance

Apple on Wednesday released an update to its Safari Web browser, bringing it to version 4.0.4. You can download the update through the Software Update system preference. It’s also available for download through Apple’s downloads Web site.

∞ Hands on: 2.26GHz Mac mini

I’ve been using Apple’s newest Mac mini for the past week or so and found it to be an eminently practical desktop computer that’s a solid value for the money. It’s not as sexy as the new iMac that Jim Dalrymple recently looked at, but for Mac users on a tight budget – and who isn’t these days – the Mac mini offers a great user experience.

Other World Computing (OWC) on Tuesday announced a significant price reduction on the Axiotron Modbook, the only Mac-based tablet computer. You can now pick one up starting at $1599, $500 less than before. If you have a MacBook you’d like to convert, conversions start at $650.

∞ Downsizing: Going from a 17-inch MacBook Pro to a 13-inch MacBook

I have been a big fan of Apple’s heaviest laptop iron for years. Since the PowerBook G4 days, I’ve been willing to forgo convenience for power and have carried a 17-inch laptop wherever I go. But circumstances change, and with Apple’s refresh to its consumer Mac line in October I decided to take the plunge with new 13-inch MacBook. It’s been quite a change, but it hasn’t been nearly the sacrifice I expected it to be.
