Apple hires Samsung chip designer

The gadget maker has hired Jim Mergard, a 16-year veteran of Advanced Micro Devices who was a vice president and chief engineer there before he left for Samsung. He is known for playing a leading role in the development of a high-profile AMD chip that carried the code name Brazos and was designed for low-end portable computers.

Exclusive

“Exclusive” is a way to dupe readers into taking you seriously, into believing that yours is the only page upon which they can devour the freshest and the latest. But that’s a lie. It always has been.

Jonathan Poritsky take a look at the history of the word exclusive.

TC Electronic Flashback X4 Delay

Just picked this up. I’ll have a review later on, but if it’s all that it’s supposed to be, this could be the ultimate delay for guitar players.

Kobo acquires Aquafadas

Kobo, maker of inexpensive e-readers, has acquired indie software developer Aquafadas, maker of digital publishing software.

A Twitter video service

Mike Isaac:

Twitter is considering building its own video-hosting technology, according to sources. That means users could upload video directly via the service’s mobile apps, instead of using hosting services like yFrog, TwitVid and Vodpod.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Slingbox

Two new Slingbox models were released last night. I’ve never had one, but I want the 500 model.

Microsoft’s new approach to mimic Apple

“There will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes, as we have chosen to do with Xbox and the recently announced Microsoft Surface,” wrote Ballmer. The new approach mimics Apple Inc, whose massively successful iPhone and iPad demonstrated tight integration of high-quality software and hardware and made Windows devices feel clunky in comparison.

Who’s laughing now Ballmer?

No compromises

John Moltz:

How many times can we sarcastically say “No compromises” before it’s not funny anymore? I know we’re not there yet, I’m just asking for future reference.

I think there will be a lot of disappointed people when these Windows 8 devices are released.

Ballmer’s bonus cut back

Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer got a lower bonus than last year’s, partly for flat sales of Windows and his failure to ensure that the company provided a choice of browser to some European customers.

I wonder what they’ll do to him when Windows 8 flops and the Surface sucks balls.

BlackBerry 10 delayed until March

Research In Motion is not likely to launch the much-anticipated BlackBerry 10 operating system software until March 2013, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek asserts in a research note. To date, the company has only said it expects to debut the first BB 10 devices in the calendar first quarter.

Not a single thing is going right at RIM.

In-flight cell service will be expensive

OnAir in-flight mobile service is considered international roaming, and is billed appropriately. (First, your carrier has to have a roaming agreement with OnAir.) This AT&T page suggests OnAir calls are billed at $3.49 per minute, for example. Text messages are $0.50 each.

That should cut down on the needless yammering.

Facebook testing a ‘want’ button

Facebook Inc is testing a feature that lets users of the social network create “wishlists” of home furnishings, clothing and other retail products, laying the groundwork for what some believe could be an eventual push into e-commerce.

Makes sense since so many people are on Facebook.

The world’s meanest sailboats

Wired:

Watch as Oracle Team USA CEO Russell Coutts, a four-time America’s Cup winner, flips an AC45 in a practice race last summer. The AC45, named for its length, is 70 feet tall, 22.6 feet wide and weighs 3,086 pounds. Now consider that the boats racing in next year’s Cup finals are twice as big and have a top speed north of 30 knots.

The big cats are back on the Bay.

I’m not a fan of Larry Ellison but I think he deserves props for livening up the America’s Cup Series. As much as I loved the “old boats”, these new ones are like F1 race cars – hi-tech and dangerous. I’ve seen some of the racing on TV and the new “yachts” are amazing and the new rules are designed to make the racing a real live TV sporting event. I wish Ellison luck.

Apple’s Maps already seeing improvements

While there is certainly a ways to go, it is clear that the company is indeed moving quickly to address issues and improve coverage for the flagship 3D mapping and imagery features in the app.

Great news.

How to speak like a Maritimer

Vice:

Maritimers communicate with one another like young twins that invent gibberish language. For starters, Maritimers speak at a speed that can only be compared to an episode of Gilmore Girls cast with leprechauns on crank. Here are a few tips if you ever want to try and converse with someone from Tatamagouche.

I had tears in my eyes reading this. I love my home province but there’s no doubt – we talk funny sometimes.

If you’ve hung around The Loop’s Publisher long enough for him to have sucked back a few Heineken, you’ll have been lucky enough to hear some of these. And I’ll admit to talking way too fast at times, too.

Analyst: HP is worthless

HP this morning lost one of the few Wall Street analysts that was still giving it the benefit of the doubt. Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu downgraded his recommendation to neutral, telling us that HP’s balance sheet is so awful, the company’s stock is really worth negative $2.

Actually, less than worthless.

Apple offered Samsung a patent license deal

According to court papers revealed recently, Apple offered to license Samsung’s 3G/UMTS technology for 33 cents per unit before they got to trial. Samsung wouldn’t agree to the deal.
