Flipboard redesigns itself around ‘smart’ digital magazines
I like the idea of Flipboard and have a couple of “magazines” of my own but I don’t seem to find the time to use the app the way it is intended. It just isn’t as compelling or full featured as I’d like it to be.
Behind the scenes photos of the Westminster Dog Show
I post this less about the dog show, which is great fun to watch and is on this weekend, and more about the choice of black and white for the photos. I love B&W photography but it doesn’t work in all situations. I think this is one of those times when it really doesn’t work.
Billboard’s top 100 power people in the music industry
If the music industry is indeed in turnaround, that’s in no small part due to the digital disrupter at No. 1, the live titan at No. 3, Alexa’s mastermind at No. 12 and the visionary label bosses, tech gurus, artist managers and media moguls (including 41 first-timers!) who comprise Billboard’s annual ranking of executive excellence.
Apple’s Eddy Cue, Jimmy Iovine, and Robert Kondrk are all tied at No. 4, while Larry Jackson and Bozoma Saint John are tied at No. 67.
Oh Samsung
The fire broke out not on the production line itself but in a part of the facility used for waste, including faulty batteries, said Samsung SDI spokesman Shin Yong-doo. He added that most of the factory was running as normal.
A Samsung factory fire caused by faulty batteries… Priceless.
Tim Cook chats with students in Scotland
I really do like Tim.
Apple took 92% of smartphone industry profits in Q4 (not really)
The headline gets reported every quarter but Dawson cautions against taking it at face value.
Met Museum makes 375,000 images free
This could be an incredible resource for designers and art students alike.
Variety’s interview with Jimmy Iovine about Apple Music
As much as I may disagree with Apple Music’s focus, I do agree with this.
Yet despite competition from Spotify, Jay Z’s Tidal, and others, Iovine doesn’t believe that streaming has to become a winner-take-all proposition.
“Not if streaming is done right,” he says. What “right” means is that each service is culturally different, he explains, so that each has a different feel. “Yeah, they all have the same catalog, but what we’re doing is we’re just building on top of that. That’s where the personality and the feel will come from.”
I only wish that Apple’s culture included less pandering to celebrities and more focus on the user experience, as well as including a wider variety of musicians and genres they are willing to promote. I doubt that will happen, but one can hope.

As I get older and my eyesight gets worse, I use some of these tips. They’re not just for the visually disabled – they’re for us “old folks” too.

“West Wing” oral history
I think this show is in the top five of all time best. I still watch it in its entirety every few years. It tailed off in the last few seasons but it was always watchable.
Watch all the 2017 Super Bowl commercials
Unless you are one of those fans who watched the six plus hours of pre-show, you might not have seen all the commercials and their associated pre-game teasers.
Lady Gaga’s halftime show drones have a bright future
I’d heard rumors of this and was interested to see how they would pull it off. Looks like it went really well.

How Apple’s ‘1984’ Super Bowl ad was almost canceled
For many of you, this might be an old familiar story but, on Super Bowl Sunday, it’s still interesting to read how the “greatest commercial ever made” might never have been broadcast.
Archerfish says “I spit in your face!”
I still remember watching a segment in a documentary about this fish when I was a kid. So, of course, my brothers and I ran around spitting on each other.
How a Pelican Case is made
This is just a promotional video for Pelican but the assembly process is interesting. Like most photographers, I’m a big fan of Pelican Cases.
The making of Apple’s HAL
I don’t know how “successful” the ad was for Apple but, re-watching it again after all these years certainly brought back the creepy factor of the ad.

Apple hires former Spotify exec
Apple hired former Spotify VP of Content Steve Savoca in January, an Apple spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider.
He’ll be doing the same thing for Apple that he did for Spotify — heading up label relations based out of New York, focusing on relationships with smaller, independent labels, especially internationally, Business Insider has learned.
Sounds like a good choice. Clearly Spotify did well with him doing that job.
Tim Cook to receive Newseum’s 2017 Free Expression Award
The Newseum announced today that Apple CEO Tim Cook will receive the Newseum’s 2017 Free Expression Award in the Free Speech category. Cook, who has led Apple since August 2011, will be recognized for his leadership in creating technology that has had a profound impact on how we communicate. Further, he has used his spotlight to take a public stand on major societal issues, including racial equality, privacy, protecting the environment, access to education and LGBT rights. Cook will accept the award during a special event to be held at the Newseum on April 18, 2017.
Much respect, Tim.
Comcast will treat Rokus like CableCARDs, not set-top boxes
The fees come into play if you continue to use the Roku in addition to your Comcast set-top box after the beta trial wraps. At that point, Comcast will treat the Roku device like any other “additional outlet.” That additional outlet incurs a $9.95 fee, minus the bring-your-own-device credit of $2.50 for using a Roku, instead of Comcast’s box. This is also how a secondary outlet that connects to Comcast’s network via a TiVo would be charged and credited.
Basically business as usual.
Google, Apple, Facebook and Uber plan to draft a joint letter opposing Trump’s travel ban
The restrictions affect the tech sector in a huge way. If it continues, Apple will have issues with WWDC in a few months.

A U.S. jury in Texas on Wednesday ordered Facebook Inc, its virtual reality unit Oculus, and other defendants to pay a combined $500 million to ZeniMax Media Inc, a video game publisher that says Oculus stole its technology.

The 25 most influential Super Bowl ads of all time
