Netflix data reveals exactly when TV shows hook viewers

Variety:

Netflix crunched cold, hard viewing data for more than two dozen TV shows and says it has determined which specific episode grabbed most subscribers to the point where they watched the entire first season.

The pilot is a huge decision point for me.

Dave’s guest spot on The Committed podcast is now live

Podcasting is a very interesting experience. It’s fun, though a little unnerving. You really have to think on your feet. Ian and Kirk were tremendously welcoming and kind. I hope I didn’t break anything.

The hidden connections in Quentin Tarantino’s films

Fan of Pulp Fiction? Reservoir Dogs? Kill Bill? Inglorious Basterds?

If you love any of these movies, I suspect you’ll dig the video below, which shows all sorts of connections woven between Tarantino’s films.

Amazing a capella Hotel California

This is really good. If nothing else, jump to about 4:15 and catch the guitar work by the guy with the red bandana. Sunglasses!

Fantastic footage of blue whale, largest critter on the planet

From the BBC One, Big Blue Live web site:

It’s the final show from Monterey Bay and the team are aiming for the ultimate wildlife encounter with the largest animal on the planet, the blue whale. Catch up with the sea otters, sea lions, sharks and whales as Matt Baker, Liz Bonnin, Steve Backshall and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall conclude this extraordinary conservation success story.

Enjoy the spectacular footage.

Apple eyes move into original programming

Apple wants to get into the biz, so they’ll need their own original shiny content. It just makes sense. Exploration or flirtation, this seems a smart, and necessary, business move.

Laso Schaller’s Insane 193 foot (59 Meter) Cliff Jump

From the YouTube page:

Remember the first time standing on a high-dive at your local pool? It was a little terrifying, right? Maybe 10 feet high? Imagine what it would be like to stand on a platform nearly 59 meters high, taller than the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and perched on a cliff above a tiny natural pool of water. Yeah…no thanks. But don’t worry, Laso Schaller’s POV of the jump is enough to make your stomach flip. Take a look at the man’s world record cliff jump, and prepare yourself for one of the gnarliest POV shots ever.

The whole thing was great to watch, but that POV shot at the end was thrilling. Full screen this puppy.

Real life first person shooter

From Kottke.org:

These folks created a real-life first person shooter game and invited strangers on Chatroulette to control the action.

This is not quite the way it sounds. It made me laugh, and puzzle over how they pulled this together. Well done.

Apple Music, the Ultimate Guide

Serenity knows her stuff, there’s a lot of detail on setup and troubleshooting, it looks great, and it’s only $4.99.

Finally, a Steve Jobs movie that really gets it

Watch the trailer, embedded below. This clicks for me. Obviously it helps that this is real footage, versus actors playing roles, but this feels real. And Gibney knows how to tell a story.
