Every iPhone ranked — Best to worst!

[VIDEO] Rene Ritchie combines a look at every single iPhone over the years with a bracket challenge (video embedded in main Loop post).

Personally, I enjoy a good retrospective, and found myself rooting for certain models. Interesting idea, well executed. How do you have enough time in the day to do all this stuff, Rene?

Microsoft adds Dark Mode to Office, makes a video to show it off

[VIDEO] Follow the headline link for an article posted by Microsoft on the process of designing and implementing Dark Mode for Office 365. Glad to see it, interesting post.

But whether you read the post or not, take a minute to watch Microsoft’s Dark Mode video, embedded in the main Loop post. Eerily beautiful, looks like it was all practical effects, old school.

5G explained

[VIDEO] Marques Brownlee took a road trip to his nearest 5G city to experience true 5G (as opposed to the fake 5G that is 5GE) for himself. The video is embedded in the main Loop post.

I love this whole video, but two things stand out. Around 3:55 in, you get a look at Verizon’s 5G hardware, perched on top of a telephone pole. Good to know what these things look like, if you are scouting for a great signal.

And about 5:27 in, you get a sense of the drop-off when you move away from that 5G cell hardware. 5G is an inconsistent experience, though even poor 5G is way faster than the fastest LTE.

Dickinson: An Apple TV+ teaser trailer

[VIDEO] From the official show description:

Dickinson is a half-hour comedy series starring Oscar® nominee Hailee Steinfeld. Created by Alena Smith, Dickinson audaciously explores the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of rebellious young poet Emily Dickinson.

Hard to wrap my head around this one. I feel the same as I did about the teaser trailer for The Morning Show.

But lesson learned. The official trailer for The Morning Show was a perfect follow-up, conveyed the depth of the show’s core, fleshed out the characters.

Dickinson is an interesting premise, a difficult marriage to pull off, bringing to life a dark, secluded character from the 1800’s, a prolific, slant-rhyming poet whose work was incredibly influential, but whose life was mostly unexplored.

I am quite curious about this show. Video embedded in the main Loop post.

Come Together on a double-sided guitar

[VIDEO] Cool guitar, great cover. Love the performance, love the audio, love the camera work. Video embedded in the main Loop post.

A first look at Disney+

Engadget got the chance to sit down with Michael Paull, president of Disney Streaming Services and look at a preview of Disney+.

A few nuggets:

Aside from shows like The Mandalorian and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which will be available on November 12th, Disney announced at D23 Expo that it has a bunch more in the works, such as Marvel’s Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk as well as a new Lizzie McGuire original.

And:

There’s also going to be a feature that will let people create profiles which are programmed for children seven and under, which are organized by characters (e.g. Mickey Mouse and Disney Princesses) instead of shows or movies.

And:

What’s more, if you’re watching a movie or show on, say, the Apple TV or Xbox One and pause, you can continue watching where you left off on your other devices.

The more I hear, the more this $6.99 a month price is a no-brainer to me. Might be enough content for me to swap out Netflix, which feels like much less of a value.

Apple TV+? I will definitely give it a try, but without a back catalog, might be a tough sell at the rumored $9.99 a month price.

Google and those Wizard of Oz ruby slippers

To honor yesterday’s 80th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz release date, Google added a little Easter egg.

Go to Google.com, then:

  • Search for “Wizard of Oz”
  • On the page that appears, look for the sparkly ruby slippers (here’s a pic).
  • With the sound on, tap or click those slippers.
  • To get back home, tap the tornado.

I find this charming.

Amazing ice hockey kid

[VIDEO] Talk about a kid who really works hard. I have a feeling this kid is going to the show someday. Hope he makes it to my team (and not Jim’s). Video embedded in main Loop post.

Deep Fakes: Full House…of Mustaches, and now it’s gone

[VIDEO] There’s a clip flying around the internet of Bill Hader being interviewed by David Letterman. Hader does impressions of Al Pacino and Tom Cruise. But in this Deep Fake version of the clip, Hader’s face morphs into Pacino and Cruise as he shifts characters. It’s eerie, creepy, fascinating, and a sign of deeper fakes to come.

If you haven’t seen the clip, take a minute to watch. And then watch the clip embedded in the main Loop post. It’s a similar treatment of the opening to the show Full House, but with a special Nick Offerman mustache treatment.

The future.

Susan Kare Macintosh commercial

[VIDEO] Susan Kare is the designer behind the original Mac icons and fonts. Her work is foundational, incredibly influential.

The video embedded in the main Loop post was posted on Andy Hertzfeld’s amazing YouTube channel. Feels like time travel to me, a real moment in time.

Apple posts four ASMR videos. What the heck is ASMR? Read on.

[VIDEO] Before you dig into any of the videos Apple just posted, here’s a link to a nice little ASMR explainer.

From the post:

Coined in 2010, ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is a relaxing, often sedative sensation that begins on the scalp and moves down the body. Also known as “brain massage,” it’s triggered by placid sights and sounds such as whispers, accents, and crackles.

With that in mind, fire up some headphones (important!) and watch each of the videos embedded in the main Loop post. Hard to pick a favorite, I’ve enjoyed all four, but don’t miss the Ghost Forest, last but not least.

Enjoy!

Bill Gates and his take on Steve Jobs as a wizard

[VIDEO] This Bill Gates interview came out about a month ago, but I just watched it this morning, thought it was worth sharing.

The whole thing is relatively short, all interesting, but the Steve Jobs bit kicks in at about 2:40 in. I definitely get a sense that Bill held a real reverence for Steve. The video is embedded in the main Loop post.

Adjacent to Greatness: Scott Knaster and a whole lotta’ Apple/Steve anecdotes

[VIDEO] If you love hearing stories about Steve Jobs and Apple, carve out some time and immerse yourself in master storyteller Scott Knaster’s one-man show, Adjacent to Greatness. The video is embedded in the main Loop post.

Ignore the production values and just listen to tales from someone who was in the room, a fly on the wall, at some very interesting moments in time.

You have no idea what you are doing. This is great.

[VIDEO] So opens Apple’s latest Behind the Mac ad, officially called “Test the Impossible” (video embedded in main Loop post).

I love great writing and, to me, this is a great open. It speaks to me. Gives me permission to fail. Addresses the same soft call to genius as Here’s to the crazy ones.

I’ve always felt Macs were different. Special.

Nice writing, Apple.

UPDATE: Turns out this is from a speech Neil Gaiman gave in 2012. Here’s a link to Neil’s tweet laying this out. Yeah, he can write. [H/T Jon Alper]

[VIDEO] Apple documentary on the creation of the Mac, shot in 1984

[VIDEO] Called “In Search of Excellence”, this video (embedded in the main Loop post) is chock full of old school Apple, with lots of Steve Jobs’ takes on the world at that time. It was produced as part of a profile of six up and coming companies. This is the part of the series that featured Apple.

Delicious.

Old school music video with the Mac as the star

[VIDEO] This popped up on Reddit this morning. It’s a music video from 2013, a fun tune with the Mac interface front and center. The video is embedded in the main Loop post.

This reminds me of the Emmy winning “Connection Lost” episode of Modern Family, where the entire episode is shown through the lens of a Mac screen via FaceTime, Messages, etc.

Coming to Apple TV+ this Fall, Snoopy in Space

[VIDEO] Some old school programming, this. Apollo 11 moon landing 50th anniversary is being celebrated, good fit there. Snoopy (and the Vince Guaraldi music you get a hint of at the very end of the trailer) is timeless.

This certainly fits the family friendly tone that’s been said to be a core value of Apple TV+. The video is embedded in the main Loop post.

Playing with the original 2001 iPod in 2019

[VIDEO] First things first, it’s amazing to me that the very first iPod debuted in October 2001.

Think about that timing for a moment. This was a bit more than a month after 9/11 and the shock was still palpable. A difficult time to command public attention and roll out a new product, to say the least.

The video embedded in the main Loop post does a nice job showing off the difficulties of working with really old gear, from port incompatibilities to replacing dead batteries on a device that was not meant to be easy to open.

I know it’s a lot to ask, but I’d really love to see a video connecting that original iPod to an iPad running iOS 13. Hey, I can dream, right?

Enjoy.

Apple TV+ posts an homage to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing

[VIDEO] The Executive Producers of the coming Apple TV+ show For All Mankind pulled together this homage for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. The video is embedded in the main Loop post.

I am really looking forward to both Apple TV+ and For All Mankind in particular. Of all the shows Apple has so far revealed, For All Mankind seems like the one with the biggest potential. Fingers crossed.

Travel around the virtual world, watching random YouTube videos with zero views

A bit of a rabbit hole. Watch random videos from around the world, all uploaded to YouTube and all with very few views.

Click the headline link, then click Go, start watching. Click the button below the video to stick with it on the off chance you find something you like.

A fascinating and bizarre slice of the internet.

I’m a Mac. And I’m a credit union.

[VIDEO] Ran across this series of commercials the other day. They were for Apple Federal Credit Union and spoofed the old “I’m a Mac. And I’m a PC” Apple commercials. And when I say spoofed, they get it pretty right. There’s the casual shirt vs the suit and tie, the fit vs the slightly paunchy, and the whimsical piano as soundtrack.

It’s clearly intentional. And it kind of works. My favorite of the series is embedded in the main Loop post.

Oh, and the URL? TheOtherApple.org. Nice.

WarnerMedia confirms its Netflix rival will be called HBO Max

So many pieces here. First, why do we need another HBO streaming service? To me, this is like having a MacBook and a MacBook Air. Confusing branding for the customer.

And consider the name HBO Max. WarnerMedia owns HBO which owns Cinemax and Cinemax is frequently shortened to Max in branding and on cable. Is this completely coincidental? I have yet to see mention of Cinemax in the marketing materials.

And the biggest piece? The new service will poach Friends from Netflix. Yet another monthly tentpole service. Want Friends? That’s going to cost you another $10 a month.

Other tentpole services include Star Trek shows from CBS Online, Star Wars/Pixar from Disney+, and The Office from NBC’s coming streaming service. Waiting for a new Seinfeld service to emerge. Not kidding.

The Simpsons: Russian art film version

[VIDEO] Think about the opening of any Simpsons episode, with Homer’s dangerous interaction with plutonium, Lisa playing her saxophone, the grocery store and crazy car ride, and the couch at the end.

Now watch the video embedded in the main Loop post. It’s art.

Apple posts two Face ID ads, “even more secure than Touch ID”

[VIDEO] Both ads are embedded in the main Loop post.

The first ad is called “Nap”. It’s subtle. The takeaway for me was mostly about attention detection, the requirement that you make eye contact to trigger your iPhone’s Face ID approval. Even a squint will do.

The second ad is called “Face ID is even more secure than Touch ID”. Interesting that Apple would make that pitch, specifically call out Face ID as more secure. Is the idea here to prod resisters to buy a newer generation iPhone, to cast Touch ID as “old tech”?

Apple COO Jeff Williams, with anecdote about Steve Jobs and the original plastic iPhone screen

[VIDEO] This was interesting to me for several reasons. The video is embedded in the main Loop post.

First, there’s the opportunity to get to know Jeff Williams, to hear him talk, tell a story. Given that Apple Design now reports to Jeff, he has new importance in the product design side of Apple.

I also appreciated the anecdote at the heart of this video. It starts at about 50 seconds in. Jeff talks about Steve Jobs carrying around one of the original iPhone prototypes and complaining about the plastic screen getting scratched. The story is being told in the Corning factory where the iPhone glass is made.

Final observation, this factory is in Kentucky, and that’s Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to Jeff’s left (the right side of your picture). This was filmed in 2017, in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
