A flashy look at the new iPad Pro

[VIDEO] A detailed look at the new iPad Pro in action (video embedded in main Loop post). I love the open of this video. Such great production values. Like butter.

The whole thing is worth watching, but one part I found particularly interesting popped up at about 2:50, where a 4K .mov file is exported to 1080p on both the new iPad Pro and the 2018 model. Amazing results. To me, this shows a splitting point from the old to the new models.

iFixit iPad Pro 2020 teardown, a solid look at those LiDAR dots

[VIDEO] Two things to watch for in this iFixit teardown of the new iPad Pro, embedded in the main Loop post:

  • Replacing the battery is impossibly difficult for a mere mortal
  • Those LiDAR dots are pretty huge

That latter point is not a complaint, just an observation. Jump to about 1:43 and see for yourself.

Compared to the fine mesh of Face ID, LiDAR dots are much larger, with a much wider spread. Makes sense. Face ID is intended for a detailed map of your face, up close, while LiDAR is intended to map, say, the walls of a room, or an arrangement of objects on a table.

Virtual Disney World YouTube channel

Going a little stir crazy? Follow the headline link and enter the rabbit hole that takes you on your favorite ride at your favorite Disney park. Each video includes a control to look around as you make your way through the ride.

The video quality is just OK, but if you are a fan of Disney, the experience is solid.

DVD bought at flea market had 80 minutes of undiscovered Seinfeld bloopers

[VIDEO] This is a pretty cool story, as told by Jon Lott on Reddit (via BoingBoing):

At the Raynham flea market 2 years ago I found a DVD with 80 minutes of previously unseen Seinfeld bloopers. These are different from the official DVD bloopers, which are already on YouTube. This DVD was in a bootleg case with a bootleg design, and a simple unvarnished disc inside. I ripped the footage from the DVD and uploaded it raw to YouTube. Forgive the video quality; the DVD has low-grade video.

The DVD was produced in 2000, which makes me think it’s a bootleg of a blooper DVD made for the cast and crew of Seinfeld in 1998 or 1999, to be shared in the days before internet. There is nothing else on the disc.

Fan of Seinfeld? Got some time on your hands? Enjoy. (video embedded in main Loop post).

The story of Steve Jobs Xerox PARC demo that changed everything

[VIDEO] Click over to the main Loop post, jump to about 30:32 in, and listen to Larry Tesler tell the story of taking Steve on the tour that led to Macintosh, and the deal that gave Apple access to some pretty important Crown Jewels.

And if you have the time, the whole video is worth watching.

Apple posts two new iPad ads

[VIDEO] First up, “Your next computer is not a computer”, followed by the sly, “How to correctly use a computer”. Apple is clearly all-out pushing the new iPad Pro as the computer for the masses. Both are embedded in the main Loop post.

The Verge pulls in six media professionals to review the Mac Pro

[VIDEO] Being owned by Vox Media gave Nilay Patel and his team access to some folks with some very high end experience, including production work on large streaming shows (think Netflix and HBO) and massive podcasts.

The review pulls no punches. Worth watching (video embedded in main Loop post) and/or reading.

Once you’ve read/watched, here’s a thread with some counterpoint to the review.

A pair of Mythic Quest videos

[VIDEO] If you’ve followed the last few episodes of The Dalrymple Report, you know I am a big fan of Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest. I’m a comedy nerd, a fan of silly, over-the-top humor that still has both intelligence and bite and, to me, Mythic Quest hits all the right notes.

Not for everyone, I do get that, but if you are at all a gamer, do check out the show.

And if you are a fan of the show, check out the video embedded in the main Loop post, a bit of marketing fluff where the show’s actors and creators share their favorite video games.

And follow it up with this, more serious interview with the show’s creators, talking about the real world of video game creation and how that inspired Mythic Quest.

I’m so looking forward to season two. My favorite Apple TV+ show.

Apple Japan, anime commercial

[VIDEO] Big fan of anime, and love this cut-together commercial from Apple Japan (video embedded in main Loop post). Check out all the different Apple logo homages in the different scenes. Whimsy. Nice.

Courtesy of Google Translate, this is the English translation of the video description:

Beyond the Mac, new stories are born one after another. A story that is not yet in this world. Come on, you too.

Me too!

“Bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera”

[VIDEO] Director Rian Johnson digs through a scene in the movie Knives Out, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Watch the whole thing, if you are into moviemaking (video embedded in main Loop post). But if you are just here for the headline quote, jump to 2:50. Interesting.

Shot on iPhone 11 Pro, showing off 4K, but not in Safari

[VIDEO] Apple:

See how iPhone 11 Pro captured the otherworldly 4K video using the Ultra Wide camera in this deep dive into the Valley of Fire.

Truly beautiful footage (embedded in main Loop post), showing off the iPhone 11 Pro’s Ultra Wide camera. But because of licensing issues, you won’t see this footage in 4K in macOS Safari. For that, you’ll need to fire up Google Chrome.

This is not new. But it is strange, having to turn to Google to show off an Apple feature.

Watch Jason Snell edit a podcast on an iPad

[VIDEO] Many reasons to watch this (video embedded in main Loop post). First, check out how much work goes into editing a podcast. I’d wager few podcasts get this much attention, this much love. This is amazing work.

Next, check out the design of Ferrite Recording Studio. The details are wonderful. And watching Jason work with Ferrite is like watching a master craft with beautifully well-designed tools.

To me, this is an app that raises the value of iPad, just as page-layout tools and LaserWriter raised the value of Mac, back in the day.

How to own some big-time music, film, and other royalties

Follow the headline link, start scrolling. It’s a market for film and music royalties:

Artists turn to Royalty Exchange to raise money and take control of their financial future. We connect them with private investors through the world’s first online marketplace for buying and selling royalties. Creators love us because we give them a powerful new way to fund their career. Investors love us because we help them generate income that’s hard to beat. And our commitment to transparency and honesty ensures value for all.

A few (of many) highlights:

  • The film “Trading Places”
  • Jay-Z, Alicia Keys “Empire State of Mind”
  • Ben & Jerry’s “Cherry Garcia”
  • “Black Water” and 23 other Doobie Brothers songs

Note that copyright is generally not included in the auction. You pay up front, get the royalties over time. Fascinating.

Apple shares Night mode ad

[VIDEO] A little Night mode music, “We Only Come Out At Night” by Smashing Pumpkins. Video embedded in main Loop post.

Neil Peart, isolated drumming

[VIDEO] Laughing Squid:

kiboko, a video editor who focuses on drum tracks, took the iconic Toronto Pearson Airport inspired instrumental “YYZ” by Rush and brought the audio of Neil Peart‘s drumming to the forefront while quieting Geddy Lee‘s bass and Alex Lifeson‘s guitar.

Beautifully done. Really showcases the complexity of Peart’s iconic drumming style. Video embedded in main Loop post.

Apple’s rack-mounted Mac Pro in the wild

[VIDEO] I’m not in the market for a Mac Pro, in any form, but I found this pair of videos quite interesting. Both are from audio engineer Neil Parfitt, both embedded in the main Loop post.

The first is the arrival and unboxing, with running observations along the way from the perspective of someone who makes their living working on TV and movie soundtracks.

My favorite quote:

I made a decision almost 22 years ago, while I was still on PC, that has brought me into this ecosystem that I can’t escape.

The second video is the Mac Pro, now rack mounted, with some interesting discussion about some of the workarounds Neil needed to get things working in his current (temporary) setup.

The Secret History of iPad

[VIDEO] This is simply great. Rene Ritchie doing what he does best, tell a story with clips and voiceover.

This is fun to watch and, in my opinion, one of the best pieces Rene has ever done. Video embedded in the main Loop post.

How to watch movies and TV shows for free

I know this sounds like piracy, but it’s not about that. This is a walkthrough of some lesser known resources that you can mine, free, for a pretty wide range of content.

Beastie Boys Story — Official sneak peek | Apple TV+

[VIDEO] Apple:

Here’s a little story they’re about to tell…Coming April 24 to Apple TV+, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz share the story of their band and 40 years of friendship in a live documentary directed by friend, collaborator, and their former grandfather, Spike Jonze.

Can’t wait for this to drop. Video embedded in main Loop post.

Video Deepfakes, in real time

[VIDEO] A deepfake is a video that is processed to overlay one person’s face on top of another. One of the earlier deepfakes to go viral was this Conan O’Brien interview in which Bill Hader does impressions of Al Pacino and Arnold Schwarzenegger. At key moments, Bill Hader’s face is post-processed to resemble each celebrity.

But the video embedded in the main Loop post breaks new ground, as the face is changed in real time, on demand, with much more detail than the Bill Hader fake.

Nothing good can come of this. Like counterfeiting.

Backcountry snowboarding at Baldface Lodge — Shot on iPhone

[VIDEO] Beautifully shot and edited. If you are a winter sports fan, this video (embedded in main Loop post) is some immersive fun.

Back in the day, I used to live around the corner (literally) from Warren Miller Filmaking in Hermosa Beach, California. Warren Miller died a few years ago, but left an enormous legacy of extraordinary skiing and surfing movies. If you enjoyed the video embedded below, do a search for:

“Warren Miller” skiing movies

Here’s one to get you started. I can only imagine what Warren would have done with an iPhone.

The curious app left behind by an Apple tech

[VIDEO] A little bit of accidental behind the scenes, shown in this iQT app an Apple tech left on this customer’s iPhone. Fascinating video, embedded in main Loop post.

Baby performs Thunderstruck

[VIDEO] This is truly a labor of love, done by a dad with way too much time on his hands. But his labor is our gain. Baby Ryan, doing Thunderstruck. Video embedded in main Loop post.

[H/T, Paul Sanson]

Apple made this

[VIDEO] Apologies in advance. This is truly bad, a flawed, monstrous gem unearthed from the bowels of The Unofficial Apple Archive. Embedded, with regret, in main Loop post.

Why everyone is copying AirPods

[VIDEO] MKBHD is answering an obvious question here. It’s all about the money.

But watch it anyway (video embedded in the main Loop post). I found this a fascinating dive into the AirPods business, starting with Phil Schiller’s “courage” announcement, then branching into Apple’s success and everyone else revving up their copiers.

Spike Jonze’s ‘Beastie Boys Story’ lands at Apple TV+

Hollywood Reporter:

The Apple streamer has picked up the documentary about the legendary hip-hop group directed by Spike Jonze and featuring Grammy Award-winning bandmembers Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz talking about their music career and 40-year friendship.

And:

A special cut of the feature documentary will open exclusively in select Imax theaters for a limited run from April 3, before the film debuts globally on Apple TV+ on April 24.

Looking forward to this one. Hoping there’s a good amount of focus on Def Jam and Rick Rubin. From the Beastie Boys Wikipedia page:

Following the success of “Cooky Puss”, the Beastie Boys began to incorporate rap into their sets. They hired a DJ for their live shows, New York University student Rick Rubin, who began producing records soon thereafter. He formed Def Jam Recordings with fellow NYU student Russell Simmons, and approached the band about producing them for his new label.

As important a subject as the Beasties are, I think Rick Rubin is an even more important figure in the tree of musical history. Would love to see Apple produce a Rick Rubin doc as a follow-on.
