Can the iPad do to gaming what the iPhone did to the point-and-shoot camera

Wade Meredith:

Like smart phones and point and shoots, iPads can compete or best the consoles on hardware specs while absolutely whipping them on platform flexibility and portability. I don’t know the console equivalent of on-device photo editing  — but between app, accessory and peripheral support for iPad, the consoles have their work cut out for them (Kinect was a good start, Playstation Move was not).

I don’t know if it will ever happen, but this was a good read.

iFixit’s iPad 3 4G teardown

iFixIt:

Is it “The New iPad?” “iPad HD?” “iPad 3?” Who cares? All we know is this: It’s here! Our CXO flew to the Telstra store in Melbourne, Australia and was first in line to get the iPad 3 for our deconstructive pleasure.

For your geeky pleasure, here is the traditional iFixIt abuse of a brand new Apple product.

Survey says: iPad most popular tablet for first time buyers

Dealnews:

A reader survey discovered 55% of current iPad owners said they would update to the third generation. But what about consumers who are currently tablet-free and finally ready to jump aboard the slate train?78% of non-tablet owners who are planning on buying their first device said they’ll spring for the newest offering from Apple. And, of the people who aren’t buying the new iPad (the remaining 22%), almost half will buy a previous generation — specifically, 60% plan on buying the iPad 2 within the next six months. Why? Because the iPad 2 is now cheaper.

Certainly an unscientific, self-selecting survey but it is most likely indicative of desire and demand among potential first time tablet buyers.

iPad is about the experience

It seems that every time a new tablet comes on the market, people compare the hardware to Apple’s market leading iPad and wonder if this is the one that will dethrone it. The problem with this thinking is that the iPad isn’t just about the hardware and specs, it’s the experience.

This is my first bi-weekly column for Techpinions. I’m joining Ben Bajarin, Tim Bajarin and Steve Wildstrom on the site where I’ll write opinion articles on the world of Apple.

Review: iPad third generation

When Apple’s iPad event ended last week, I walked out of the venue, spoke to Phil Schiller for a couple of minutes and went into a meeting with Apple executives. That’s where I picked up my new iPad and Apple TV. […]

iPads and physician training

Lucas Mearian:

In November 2010, researchers gave Apple iPads to 115 University of Chicago internal medicine residents. The residents were able to access electronic patient records, the hospital’s paging system to order tests, and medical publications for reference information.

Pros and cons of a smaller iPad

Kyle Baxter:

I have no doubt that Apple is working on a small iPad, but that’s a separate question of whether they will actually release it. Let’s think through it.

That’s always important to remember. Apple experiments with a lot of different products, but that doesn’t mean they’ll ever get released. Having said that, Kyle has some interesting points.

PlayBook gets a keyboard and trackpad

You thought I was joking, right. No, it’s true. The most backward tablet in the world just got worse. The only thing they forgot was a stylus — maybe they can get some from Samsung.

What the hell are these guys thinking?

UAE Cabinet adopts iPad

On Sunday, HH Sheikh Mohammed tweeted the launch of the iPad “Minister e-briefcase” for UAE Cabinet members.

Every government should do this.

84% of companies buying tablets will buy iPads

Going forward, better than one-in-five companies (22%) say they’ll be purchasing tablets for their employees during 2nd Quarter 2012, and the percentage reporting they’ll buy Apple iPads has jumped to the highest level of corporate iPad demand ever seen in a ChangeWave survey.A total of 84% of companies planning to buy tablets next quarter now say they’ll purchase iPads – a 7-pt leap since the previous survey.

Game developers eye the iPad

Reuters:

Apple Inc’s faster and sharper-looking new iPad is drawing the notice of the traditional video game industry, as developers are envisioning games for it that have more in common with the visceral 3D shooter “Call of Duty” than “FarmVille.”

This could be a huge market for Apple. Instead of coming straight at it, Apple is outflanking everyone — the next year or so will be very interesting.

More on ranking the rumors

The Atlantic Wire posted its own roundup of iPad rumors and how sites did in calling the features.

JailbreakCon

Matt Brian:

Commencing on September 29 at the South San Francisco Conference Center in California, JailbreakCon welcomes back many of the speakers that travelled from the US to London last year, including Cydia creator and prominent Jailbreak activist Jay “Saurik” Freeman, members of the Chronic Dev Team and Barrel tweak creator Aaron Ash.

iPad pre-orders sold out, demand ‘off the charts’ says Apple

“Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased,” Apple said in a statement. “Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date.”

So much for the people that said it wouldn’t sell.

The iPad is unbeatable

Slate:

Imagine you run a large technology company not named Apple. How are you feeling today, a day after Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the new iPad? Are you discounting the device as just an incremental improvement, the same shiny tablet with a better screen and faster cellular access? Or is it possible you had trouble sleeping last night? Did you toss and turn, worrying that Apple’s new device represents a potential knockout punch, a move that will cement its place as the undisputed leader of the biggest, most disruptive new tech market since the advent of the Web browser? For your sake, my hypothetical CEO friend, I hope you’re frightened.

No mobile hotspot for the New iPad LTE from AT&T at launch

The Verge:

An AT&T spokesperson says “We are working with Apple to enable this feature in the future, but we currently do not offer it.” So for the moment, hotspot capability on the new iPad appears to be a Verizon exclusive in the US.

Might make the choice of US carrier easier for some people.

In addition, the plan adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage for the same $49 service fee as seen on the iPhone.AppleCare+ for the iPad sells for $99 and must be purchased within 30 days of the purchase of the iPad.

Poor Sprint gets nothing as Verizon, AT&T nab 4G iPads

CNET:

Apparently, Sprint Nextel’s seat at the cool kids’ table got revoked by Apple. As AT&T and Verizon Wireless got their hands on a shiny new 4G-enabled iPad, Sprint got stuck with zilch.“Sprint is not carrying the iPad at this time,” said a Sprint spokesman. He declined to comment on whether the company would eventually get to sell the device. The lack of an iPad could have to do with timing. Sprint is in the middle of rolling out its 4G LTE network, and expects to be in 10 cities by the end of June. That’s nice for Sprint, but Apple was likely looking at that paltry deploying and opting to take a pass.
