iPhone power button tips
Great tip. I knew that tapping the power button on an incoming call silenced the ringer. I did NOT know that a double-tap sent the call directly to voicemail. And one more: tap the power button to lock the screen. Nice.
Gaming the App Store with $999 app pricing
This seems too crazy to be true.
It all begins with an otherwise unremarkable app suddenly skyrocketing in price, oftentimes all the way to the App Store’s limit of $999.99. The developer, or whoever is orchestrating the scam, wires a massive amount of money — Grachov used $10,000 as an example — to a second party. That individual then purchases 10 copies of the app, exhausting the available funds and indirectly paying $7,000 of the original deposit back to the developer. Apple takes their 30% as usual.
Hipjot swiping soft keyboard capable of 120 WPM
I like the concept here, combining a swiping keyboard with the multi-touch tech that allows both thumbs to get involved at the same time.
Macintosh 30th anniversary event set for January 25
Like a lot of you, I’m sure, I’ve been a Mac user since the beginning. True, I didn’t buy my first Mac until March of 1984, but that was purely lack of funds, not lack of desire.
And, in the blink of an eye, it’s 30 years later. Big wave of nostalgia.
Reddit thread on hardening/securing OS X Mavericks
Take a look and, if you’ve got some experience in this area, add to the thread.
Your Mac’s built-in screen recorder
Not sure when this feature got added, but since this was new to me, thought this was worth sharing.
Launch QuickTime Player (it’s in your Applications folder). Now select New Screen Recording from the File menu, or type control-command-N.
Apple vs Amazon vs Google, told in 9 bar charts
These nine bar charts lay out the stock fundamentals for Apple, Amazon, and Google. Any analyst that follows these companies surely is familiar with all of these. They tell a strong story. Certainly not definitive, but hard to ignore.
Finding your energy hog apps in Mavericks
There’s lots of good stuff in the attached article, but here’s a nugget for folks running Mavericks on a laptop.
Finding the best wi-fi channel using Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics utility
Was trying to do a little tune-up on my wi-fi network, ran across this helpful article. I did not know there was a built-in wi-fi diagnostic tool.

You can find the Fox Sports Go app here. The caveat is that you need to be logged in to your cable/satellite provider in order to access the stream.
OWC confirms user-upgradability of Mac Pro
Ever since it was discovered that the new Mac Pro uses a socketed CPU, there has been some debate as to whether that meant a user could upgrade the CPU on their own. Other World Computing rolled up their sleeves and put any contention to rest.
Fantastic collection of Mac keyboard shortcuts
This is worth looking through, even if you already are a savvy Mac user. Know any Mac newbies? Pass this along.

Adding items to the Finder sidebar
Though this is likely old hat to many of you, I thought this was worth passing along for folks new to Mavericks or to the sidebar.
Before Mavericks, to add a file to the Finder sidebar, you simply dragged it over and released it. Easy to remember, easy to perform. The down side was accidentally adding items to the sidebar. Not a big problem, but it’s happened to me.
With Mavericks, Apple changed the way this works. If you drag a file to the sidebar, you can drop it into a folder stored in the sidebar, but releasing the file won’t add it to the sidebar itself.
AnandTech review of the new Mac Pro
This is the review I’ve been waiting for. When I am in the market for a new camera, I always make my way to dpreview.com. Anand Lal Shimpi brings the same level of geeky goodness to his reviews.
Mac Pro teardown from iFixit
The new Mac Pro is built to be taken apart. This well-executed teardown from iFixit shows off the engineering excellence behind the Mac Pro design.
The teardown starts by removing the cover. Slide the lock-switch, pull off the cover. So easy. Truly a thing of beauty.
iOS 7 now installed on 78% of active Apple devices
Last Friday, we posted a link to a graphic that detailed the process HTC goes through to vet new versions of Android. The multi-company hoops that need leaping, as well as the incredible number of devices that need to be tested, are both barriers to adoption of new Android revs and contributors to fragmentation.
Apple has announced their latest adoption rates for iOS 7. 78% is a huge number.

Other World Computing took a Mac Pro apart, stripped it to the very core, and shared the pics on their site.
Why it takes so long for an Android rev to makes its way into the wild
Great infographic on the HTC web site details the number of hoops an individual device manufacturer needs to jump through in order to clear an update for release.
Steve Jobs calls an audible and does a little dance
This is a great story, via MG Siegler, who was there when it happened.

Follow the headline link for a good list of discounted apps. Head over to AppShopper.com for more. Be sure to click the “Price Drops” tab.
How to download a file when all you have is a URL
Nice little Mac tip. Here’s one way to download an audio or video file when all you have is the URL.
Hands on with the new Mac Pro
David Pierce gives a nice little tour of Apple’s newest superstar.
It cuts a striking figure, despite its relatively small stature. It’s also incredibly dense, far heavier than I expected. Ten inches tall, 6 inches around, and about weighing in at around 11 pounds, it’s definitely meant to be held by its bottom instead of its top lip.
Hackers activate MacBook webcam without green warning light
Chilling.
Mac Pro is now live on Apple site
I think I’m more excited about the Mac Pro than I was about the iPad Air. Both the base and high end models show US shipping dates of December 30th.
New Mac Pro goes on sale tomorrow
I absolutely cannot wait. A powerhouse and a thing of beauty. Yes please.
Apple’s brand new Misunderstood ad
This has immediately moved to the top of my list of all-time favorite Apple commercials. Touches all the right notes for the holidays. So very well done.
