I’ve got friends who work at Pixar and once got a “behind the scenes” look at the operation. The server room is absolutely incredible.
Cookie Monster’s Siri commercial “outtakes”
I love the idea of “outtakes” like this.
Awesome teen accepted to all 8 Ivy League schools
I won’t lie – I couldn’t even name the eight Ivy League schools, let alone have had any chance of being accepted to one of them. I hope, without being too stalkerish, the media keeps track of this remarkable young woman. It would be interesting to see what she makes of her amazing life.
This 112-year-old company is making enormous tables for the Apple Campus 2
I don’t know if it’s because of our slightly obsessive fixation on Apple or whether it’s because Apple is known for making really interesting decisions but I can guarantee, this is the first time I’ve ever read an article about table design.
Winners of the Smithsonian Magazine’s 2015 photo contest
As always, some spectacular images are presented here. I tell my photography students to look at and study these kinds of winning photographs and try and figure out how the photographer created it, both technically and creatively.
Rise of ad blocking is the ad industry’s fault, says outgoing FTC commissioner
Bang on. If the industry had respected consumer wishes and respected their customers, we wouldn’t have the proliferation of ad blocking and ad blocking blockers resulting in a virtual arms race of Us vs Them.
10 seasons of ‘The Joy of Painting’ on YouTube
Do not start watching these videos unless you have a lot of free time. Ross’ voice is so gentle and soothing, you’ll either fall asleep or be hypnotized and end up watching 10 hours non-stop.
Google’s parent company is deliberately disabling some of its customers’ old smart-home devices
This is going to be a continuing problem with the Internet of Things and why I don’t trust or want to use most of them. Many IoT devices simply won’t work without an internet connection. And some, like this product, can be obsoleted on a whim by the manufacturer.
Why all printers suck (even the best ones)
Having used home and small office printers for over 25 years, it’s hard to argue with their premise. I have an Epson R2000 printer I love – when it works. But I dread having to print something on it because I know, even if I printed just fine yesterday, some problem will crop up when I use it today to make me waste time, energy, paper, and ink troubleshooting it.
“Alien Day” is April 26th, 2016
If you are lucky enough to live in a city with an Alamo Drafthouse, you owe it to yourself to see one of the greatest horror sci-fi movies of all time. I never had the opportunity to see either movie in a theater and am jealous of those folks who will get the chance on April 26th.
Aretha Franklin – Soul Survivor
There is no one on the planet who sang like Aretha did in her prime. My mom was a huge fan (sadly, mom would ruin a lot of my listening by singly along, badly) and we listened to everything she recorded when I was a kid. Even now, at the age of 74, she is a better singer than 99.99% of people on tour today and can still occasionally reach the vocal power of her 70’s fame.
A journey through the most disgusting baseball ballpark food
Some of the food pictured is truly disgusting. I’m not sure what started this gatronomic arms race but there’s no need for it. It’s a baseball game. The only food you need is a hot dog or a hamburger and a beer.
A letter to Apple: you’ve given my brother life
What a great story, not from the point of view of Apple but from this young man who could have easily given up, bemoaning his lot in life but instead, pushes through his physical impairments to be the best person he can be.
These Google Nik Collection video courses are now 100% free
I haven’t used the Nik Collection in years so I’m looking forward to watching these tutorials to bring me up to speed.
Apple flying the pirate flag
On its 40th anniversary, Apple is flying a replica of that original pirate flag over its corporate headquarters today.
Apple releases iOS 9.3.1, fixes hyperlink crash bug
Go grab it now.
Hear Moby Dick read in its entirety by Benedict Cumberbatch, John Waters, Stephen Fry, Tilda Swinton & more
I’m not a huge fan of audio books but I’m definitely going to download and listen to this. Thanks very much to my friend Moeskido for the link.
The next 40
Really interesting analysis of Apple. One of the key points is Apple is neither a software or hardware company. Dediu says, “My simple proposal is to think of Apple (and actually any company) as a customer creator.”
AnyList review: Grocery app crosses off nearly everything on our shopping list
I’m a huge fan of AnyList, having used it for over a year. It’s great for keeping track of groceries and its recipe integration works really well as does the ability to share shopping lists with others in the family.
Ultimate spring baby animal cam compendium
Spring is sprung and with it comes new life and cute little baby animals. If you have kids, you may not want to show them this. They are liable to be glued to the screen. I know I’m constantly watching the Penguin Cam.
Apple strikes deal with MLB to provide every team with iPad Pros
Their use may be optional but there’s no doubt every manager in the game will eventually be seen with one of these iPads within arm’s reach in every major league dugout. Major League Baseball may be old school in a lot of ways but the increasing use of sabermetrics has changed the game.
Artificial gills to breathe underwater: a million dollar scam?
I received a pitch for this product last week and as soon as I saw the email, I thought it was BS even though I’d love for it to be real. I’m not an expert in scuba diving but I have done it often in the past and I know companies have been trying to make this technology work for decades, with little to no success for the reasons mentioned in the article. Sadly, I’d be willing to be the 2,000 backers who have put up over $800,000 so far will be out of luck and will never see an actual functioning product. It once again brings to mind the old adage, “If it seems to good to be true, it is”.
Apple releases new version of iOS 9.3 for older devices with activation fixes
For those of you affected by this bug, Apple says this new build should solve the issue for you.
10 outstanding cars that stole the New York Auto Show
I really miss the New York Auto Show. The Vancouver version is on now and it’s more of a “car dealer show”. Sadly, we get few of the “cool cars” the Detriot, LA and New York shows are lucky enough to see. I’d give up body parts for that 2017 Nissan GT-R.
How to customize your iPhone vibrations to tell who’s calling
This is one of my favorite tips to show to those unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the iPhone’s OS. It’s really helpful because you can set customized vibrations so you don’t even need to look at the screen or hear the ringer to know who’s calling.
Netflix admits to throttling video on AT&T & Verizon, says it was to protect viewers
The line, “to protect viewers”, feels like a load of bull. If that’s what they were doing, why not be transparent about it and let the users make the decision whether or not they wanted to be throttled?
Learning from Tay’s introduction
I find this whole story fascinating. Not just Microsoft’s seeming cluelessness about how this would turn out (entirely predictably) but how Twitter reacted to Tay (offensively and again, entirely predictable) and the hows and whys of AI chatbots in general.
Free Nik Collection available to everyone
I’ve used these plu-gins in the past and they are very good. At the low, low price of free, they are even better. You can download them here.
Inside Liam, Apple’s super-secret, 29-armed robot that tears down your iPhone
This is another of those things that Apple does because it makes economic sense but has the additional benefit of making environmental sense.
Case. Bands. Faces. Go.
Apple has posted this really cool “Interactive Apple Watch Gallery”. You choose the size and style of the Apple Watch, then choose a strap, then a watch face. It’s a great way to see what different cases and straps look like in combination without having to go to the Apple Store. The only thing its missing is pricing of your choices.
