Need a burst of happy today? The folks at Pixar have you covered.
The NYT buying Wirecutter and Sweethome is so much more amazing than you think
I think the sites are amazing, using them on a regular basis, but I don’t think the sale itself is. Actually, the sale makes me worry what The New York Times will do to make changes to suit itself, rather than its readers.
What to expect from Apple’s Mac event
It’s unlikely all of these products will be upgraded tomorrow but Apple has a lot of catching up to do.
Images of new MacBook Pro with Magic Toolbar leaked in macOS Sierra 10.12.1
No Escape key.
The 20 CDs given out during the original iPod launch
Nobuyuki Hayashi: The event was reported on uncountable number of media outlets, from radios, TVs and web news (Blog was still new back then, and there were virtually no social media). But not many of the coverages talks about the … Continued
The definitive map of the world’s extraordinary sights
Next time you go traveling, check out this map to see what is in the area you’ll be visiting. Next year, I’m (hopefully) heading to Portugal and Southeast Asia to teach beginning photography workshops and I’ve already picked out some of these extraordinary places to visit.
How to find the best seat in any movie theater
At 6’3″, I generally sit on the aisle for legroom but I’m going to try this “trick” next time I go to a theater.
How to use Portrait Mode on iPhone 7 plus
Notice the difference in these shots from a professional photographer, in particular, the background elements. Something I teach my students all the time is to look behind your subject to see if there are elements there that don’t add to or even subtract/distract from your subject.
Still ticking: The improbable survival of the luxury watch business
I don’t know how improbable it is. After all, rich people have and will always want rich people products, won’t they?
The iPod is now 15 years old
Younger readers may not realize just how insanely cool the iPod was.
Enough with the 10-year anniversary stuff
Daring Fireball: Let me add here a note about something that’s been bothering me for months: the notion that Apple is going to do something “special” next year to commemorate the iPhone’s 10th anniversary. I would wager heavily that they … Continued
Here’s what you can buy at Apple’s special campus store in Cupertino
Whenever I went to San Francisco for Macworld Expo, I always tried to arrange a trip to the Apple Employee Store to get t-shirts or knick-knacks you can’t find anywhere else.
Speed up your web browsing in a few clicks: A brief introduction to DNS
After today’s outages, I thought a little primer on what DNS is might be appropriate.
Don’t plan on using your autonomous Tesla to earn money with Uber or Lyft
I find this fascinating. Is it even legal for Tesla to limit how you can use your own vehicle? I’ve been told it isn’t but that Tesla could, conceivably, void your warranty if you do. Regardless, how Tesla would or could detect the ride-sharing activity is interesting in and of itself.
Phone app helps save Seattle man
I love reading stories like this. Imagine how much further along technology will be in five years. The PulsePoint app can be downloaded here.
The secret behind Italy’s rarest pasta
I never thought there would be kinds of food that would be endangered in this manner. After reading this story, I want to go to Italy and try the “threads of God”.
Debate over: IBM confirms that Macs are $535 less expensive than PCs
Those of you who have worked in IT probably already knew this and many of us have known or suspected it for years. When I worked for Apple 20+ years ago, we had a slide deck that showed this ROI. I never understood why Apple never took advantage of the data they had on it.
Apple sues Mobile Star for selling counterfeit power adapters and charging cables through Amazon
It’s understandable why people want to buy adapters and cables from third parties because the Apple-branded ones are ridiculously expensive. But, their quality is undoubtedly suspect which is why Apple wants them off the market.
Smartphone camera shootout: Google Pixel takes on the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7 Edge
Another shootout between the three most popular camera phones. Interesting to compare the Verge’s opinions with those of the CNET article I linked to yesterday.
Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur lead nominees for Rock Hall of Fame
I love these stories if only for the arguments they generate. I think Pearl Jam and Tupac should be in the Hall but would disagree that Journey, the J. Geils Band, and Joe Tex deserve entry. What about you? Who do you think, out of the 19 nominees this round, deserves to be in or not?
Composite photos of planes at airports around the world
I’ve seen some of this artist’s work before and it is incredible the amount of time and skill this takes.
Google Pixel vs. iPhone 7 Plus: Which camera is better?
This is an interesting comparison. The reviewer uses the phones and takes the shots that an “average” person would take. This is not a “Review by a Pro” and therefore, might be even more applicable to our readers. Given the shots the reviewer used, I really don’t have very much argument with their conclusions.
Roll over Beyoncé: Chuck Berry announces a surprise album
Berry is one of the founders of Rock and Roll with a tumultuous history and relationship with music. It will be really interesting to hear this album and what kind of music he has chosen to release as his last.
How to make a nasty cold suck less
I’m just getting over a cold that had me laid out on my couch for a week, sniffling and whining like the giant baby I am.
Steve Jobs at the D: All Things Digital Conference
Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher loved having Jobs at their conference. Not only did it goose attendance but Jobs was always a good, challenging interview for them. Great to see these interviews now available more widely.
Kick back, relax and enjoy a master window calligrapher at work
This is amazing. Most of us have handwriting that is barely legible yet this guy is doing beautiful calligraphy, handheld, on a large scale.
10 best mirrorless cameras in 2016
While I love my Nikon D600, I also enjoy using my mirrorless Olympus M1. Mirrorless cameras have their own pros and cons but they are getting better and better and many create images to rival their similarly priced “full sized” rigs.
Despite early troubles, everyone is updating to iOS 10
“Likely” more accurate?
Danny MacAskill’s “Wee Day Out”
I have no idea who Danny MacAskill is but he sure as hell can ride a bike.
Apple’s recycling robot wants your old iPhone. Don’t give it to him.
The article makes an interesting point that many of us, even if we do recycle, recycle too quickly.
