The Talk Show: Now banned in China

Jim Dalrymple returns to the show for the first episode of 2017. Topics include New Year’s Eve, Siri/Alexa/Google Assistant, Apple’s aging AirPort and Mac Pro lineups, the future of desktop Macs, Apple Watch battery life, and rumors of upcoming new iPads.

I always have so much fun doing Gruber’s show.

Apple’s Carpool Karaoke to have rotating hosts

Furthermore, the series won’t have a single host in the drivers’ seat. Instead, the trio conceived of a format that is more of an interview series than longer versions of the “Late Late Show” bit, with a different “host” for every episode.

“We’re really excited about the pairings we’re putting together,” Corden said. Those pairings include more traditional musical choices like John Legend with Alicia Keys and Seth MacFarlane with Ariana Grande, but also more outside-the-box choices like Billy Eichner in the passenger seat, surrounded by the band Metallica, or former NFL star and talk show host Michael Strahan with NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon.

It will be interesting to see how this goes. One of the keys to the success of the show was Corden’s personality and comedy, so I’m not sure how it will go with a longer format and different hosts.

Amazon’s Alexa in your home

At the CES show this week a raft of appliance and home electronics makers said they have added Amazon’s voice-controlled virtual assistant, Alexa, to products ranging from TVs to robot vacuums. For non-techies, CES is the annual Las Vegas geek fest where these companies converge to show off their latest and greatest gizmos and features to more than 100,000 attendees.

We don’t know where this is going yet, but it’s clear that Amazon wants to be the hub in your home, and third-parties are buying in. Siri still seems to be the assistant you carry with you, but not the one that controls your surroundings.

Consumer Reports MacBook Pro bullshit

Consumer Reports has a history of embarrassing itself in its recommendations. I think we all saw that something was wrong with its results and that they were published specifically to get headlines. That certainly worked for them, but it also further damaged their reputation. They should have postponed publishing the results until they were sure everything was correct. Rene Ritchie has a nice article on it.

Art created with bananas

I really didn’t know what to expect, but this is really cute. My favorite is the two bananas hugging.

AT&T unveils Call Protect to help manage unwanted calls

Today, AT&T launches AT&T Call Protect. The free network-based service gives eligible AT&T wireless customers with HD Voice more control over unwanted calls on their smartphones.

This innovative solution harnesses the power of the AT&T network to give customers automatic fraud blocking and suspected spam call warnings.

Sounds like a great idea, but I was under the impression that many of the spam calls cycle through numbers endlessly. That could be a long cat and mouse game, but hopefully with technology, they can curb a lot of it.

Nokia sues Apple

Nokia Corp said on Wednesday it had filed a number of lawsuits against Apple Inc for violating 32 technology patents, striking back at the iPhone maker’s legal action targeting the one-time cellphone industry leader a day earlier.

Britain prepares tighter laws on drones after air safety scares

In April, a British Airways jet was hit by a suspected drone as it landed at London’s Heathrow airport, while in August a passenger plane narrowly avoided being hit by a drone as it prepared to land in Cornwall.

There are a lot of very responsible drone owners, but like many things in life, there are a few that are so irresponsible, it gives everyone a bad name. Flying a drone anywhere near an airport or over a major fire when helicopters are trying to fight the fire is just plain stupid.

Samsung Note 7 still ruining flights

It’s just horrifying that people are still using these fire hazards.

Update: Apparently it was some asshat who changed their SSID to Note 7. There are some stupid, stupid people in this world.

Scaling Responsive Animations

Scaling our websites and applications so that they look great on every screen can be difficult. A big portion of that difficulty can be trying to get specific components, particularly ones that have pieces that have to stay a certain size (like animations), to look good regardless of the screen size. In this post, we’ll cover how to help keep our responsive animations sized the way we want them.

Facebook charged for providing misleading information to EU

The European Commission has charged Facebook Inc with providing misleading information during its takeover of the online messaging service WhatsApp, opening the company to a possible fine of 1 percent of its turnover.

The EU is on fire this year. Facebook, Google, and Apple have all felt the wrath.

Uber’s self-driving cars having problems with bike lanes

Uber has admitted that there is a “problem” with the way autonomous vehicles cross bike lanes, raising serious questions about the safety of cyclists days after the company announced it would openly defy California regulators over self-driving vehicles.

It’s interesting that this was observed before the launch of the self-driving cars.

Tim Cook says great desktops are coming

“Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we’re committed to desktops,” Cook wrote. “If there’s any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that.”

Look, I see why people are saying Apple might be done with desktops, but it doesn’t make sense at this point. Someday maybe, but not now.
