The primary website for NBC, NBC.com, was breached by hackers and for a few hours visitors may have fallen victim to RedKit malware – a “drive by download” – if they visited or viewed the site.
Chromebook Pixel first thoughts
Om Malik:
I surfed through a few websites — and clicked on a lot of ads, unintentionally. I used Google Maps and Google Photos and used touch to experience them. I am guessing that there is a growing number of people who want touch on their laptops — I simply use the iPad for all things cloud.
That said, I have some reservations about the device and its positioning. It is hard to pay $1,299 for a device when I can get a better-equipped MacBook Air, which despite its age is a lot more flexible and expandable. Pichai said that he wanted to focus on the high end of the market because they want power users, early adopters and developers to embrace this platform.
Om has a lot of good points in his article — it’s definitely worth a read. I especially like that he argues with Google about it.

Life at Apple after Steve Jobs
“Weird.”
That was the one-word answer given by Apple (AAPL) chairman Arthur D. Levinson when asked to describe his experience running the company’s board of directors since Steve Jobs’s death. Levinson, who joined the board in 2000, was a colleague and close friend to Apple’s legendary founder and CEO. On Tuesday, he said that Jobs’s absence remains tough to ignore even as the company has continued introducing new products and making fresh announcements.

Taking CNN down a peg or two
I really don’t understand what CNN and other mainstream media are doing these days, but their articles make very little sense. Here’s a good takedown of CNN’s latest.

To improve their chances of beating a spam filter by sending you spam from your contact’s account, the spammer first has to break into that account. This means many spammers are turning into account thieves.
Good to see Google fighting these people.
The cheap iPhone problem
Everyone wants Apple to release a cheaper iPhone, but there are some realities in building and bringing a device to market. Benedict Evans takes a look at it.
Maximization
I get how it works. I just don’t care. I’m not interested in squeezing something so tight that I get every last drop. I don’t want, need, or care about every last drop. Those last drops usually don’t taste as good anyway. My thirst is usually well quenched far before that final drop.
Interesting thoughts from Jason Fried.
Google retail stores
Seth Weintraub:
An extremely reliable source has confirmed to us that Google is in the process of building stand-alone retail stores in the U.S. and hopes to have the first flagship Google Stores open for the holidays in major metropolitan areas.
Here’s what I don’t understand — Google hates talking to its customers, so what are they going to do in a retail store? Obviously, they will have workers in those locations, but having retail stores means having an infrastructure of people. Sometimes people that have to talk to customers.
