Speakers push and pull surrounding air molecules in waves that the human ear interprets as sound. You could even say that hearing is movement detection. So what makes a speaker travel back and forth at just the right rate and distance, and how does that make sound?
I thought I knew how speakers worked. After watching this cool web page, I realized I had no clue how speakers worked.
I had a clue, but it still seems odd.
I had a clue … i think they are going to be very detailed. I mean its a magnet (permeant) vs electro magnet – one’s on a moving coil (hence the cone or tweeter – or whatever driver) and this causes the diaphragm to move – I’m all about the base, the base, the base – no treble! (base moves more air!)
and I used to have software that would model woofer enclosures.
Microphones work exactly the same but in reverse. Air vibrations move the mic’s diaphragm which generates electrical current and voltage. Your audio interface measures the voltage at your selected sample rate and stores it. In the ideal world, Playing back makes the speaker vibrate the same way the mic did (or a close approximation thereof), but it’s bigger so it moves more air.
Truth, which is why you can make your speaker into a mic or your mic into a speaker… to no particularly good effect, but nonetheless…
