∞ Gelaskins releases iPad protectors

Gelaskins, makers of removable art prints for iPods, iPhones, MacBooks and other devices, has announced the release of Gelaskins for iPad. Each Gelaskin costs $29.99, but if you buy three, you get the fourth for free.

Gelaskins protect the iPad without adding bulk – the covers adhere to the surface of the device using a 3M adhesive that can be removed without marking up the iPad’s case. The company has produced skins based on pop art and fine art alike, ranging from H.R. Giger to Gustav Klimt, Vincent van Gogh to Ralph Steadman.

If you can’t find one that you like, you can have a custom Gelaskin made using your own art. Starting with a basic iPad template, you can upload your own art, lay it out, preview it, and request for it to be printed through Gelaskins’ Web site. DIY iPad covers are also priced at $29.99.

Gelaskins has created collections with collaboration partners including Marvel, Dark Horse Comics, Tokidoki, Metal Gear Solid Touch and others. None of these have been layed out by Gelaskins yet for use with the iPad, but you are able to flag your favorite designs from those Collaborations collections as “Favorites,” then use them with the Gelaskins DIY Web site to create custom iPad Gelaskins.

Oh, by the way, if you examine the image above carefully, you may note a small hole in the upper front bezel of the Gelaskin (Jeremiah Ketner’s “After the Kiss”). You’re not imagining things. The iPad has no webcam, but that hole enables the iPad’s light sensor to operate, according to Gelaskin’s Brian Dunn. The light sensor enables the iPad to automatically adjust brightness.
