∞ Other World Computing goes wind-powered

Popular Mac peripheral maker Other World Computing announced Thursday that it’s become the first technology manufacturer and distributor in the United States to become 100 percent wind-powered.

The company operates its Woodstock, Illinois-based headquarters on a Vestas V39-500 kW wind turbine. The turbine produces more power than OWC needs, however, so the surplus will be sold back to the local power provider.

turb_full_vertOWC’s new facility, which opened in 2006, was designed and constructed to receive a favorable Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. In fact, the facility is in the final stages of receiving LEED Platinum certification, the highest possible certification.

Other “green” features of OWC’s facility include a geothermal ground-coupled heat pump system, fiber optic rooftop light-harvesting technology, high-insulation windows and exterior sunshade, “smart” sensors to adjust energy in unused rooms, water conservation systems and more.
