The Dalrymple Report: Dolly, Apple Event, New Macs
It was a sad day for the music world as one of the greats passed away this week. Dolly Parton was celebrated around the world when news of her passing reached the public, and every bit of it was deserved. Apple’s first event featuring its new CEO, John Ternus, has been announced for September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. It is expected that John will introduce a bunch of new products, including the Foldable iPhone. It’ll be an event to watch for sure. Apple this week also announced a new Mac mini with M6, M5 Pro, a new MacStudio with M5 Max, and M5 Ultra. That’s a lot of power.

Sometimes we like to share things going on in our lives, this week is my turn. I just got back from a trip to Winnepeg, spending some time with friends we met last year. Besides being the nicest people I’ve ever met (that’s coming from a Canadian), they also showed us a really good time in Canadian cottage country. Dave and I also talk about some difficulties setting alarms in iOS 27 and a misstep by Apple has revealed the new camera-equipped AirPods Pro.

Ring had an amazing ad during the Super Bowl that will use its camera network to help find lost dogs. Sounds great, but Dave has a warning about the new service. The Olympics started and Dave and I have been watching all kinds of different sports. It looks like some of the best features of Siri have once again slipped and will not be introduced when Apple said they would.

My wife got me a pair of Meta Ray Ban sunglasses this week. I haven’t had a lot of time to work with them , but I talk about my first impressions. Amazon Web Services went down this week and it took some of the biggest tech companies along with it. So much money and expertise all taken out because of one simple mistake. Apple’s recently released products are availble for pickup now and there doesn’t seem to be shortages of anything. Apple has been moving into live sports over the past couple of years with MLS and MLB, but now Apple has it’s biggest one ever–F1. They will get the rights to F1 in the U.S. starting next year.

I’m heading off to Miami this weekend to see the Formula 1 Grand Prix and take a tour of the pit lane. Dave tells us about his Formula 1 experience and his trip to Texas. We also talk about the rumored deal between Apple and Google to have Apple use Gemini in Apple Intelligence—this is probably the best news ever for Apple’s AI efforts. If you haven’t tried Gemini yet, you should—it’s incredible. Apple is being forced to allow developers to get payment for their apps from outside the App Store, which means Apple doesn’t get its 30% cut.

The iPhone 16 is set to be available on September 20. Many people put in their preorders, but less than an hour after they started, shipping times were already pushed back to October. Early tests on iPhone 16 battery life are encouraging, and all of the new Apple OSes have been officially released. Of course, one of the big features that everyone is waiting for is Apple Intelligence, but it didn’t arrive yet, but there is a schedule that shows the supposed times for its arrival.

I found a couple of bugs in Apple’s tvOS that have been very annoying over the last few months. They seem to have started after Apple introduced a new menu system in the software in the last version. Apple announced the date for its latest event where the iPhone 16 is expected to be introduced and based on the information we currently have, Dave and I look at the major differences between the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16.

This is a great move for Apple because it will introduce many new people to the service. Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA form Alliance for OpenUSD to drive open standards for 3D content, but one company is missing from that list. Dave walks us through a little Easter Egg in iOS.
