Dell dumps Android-based Streak 7

Dell on Monday confirmed that it had stopped selling the Streak 7. The tablet is no longer available online and is withdrawing just months after Dell axed the Streak 5. In a statement, it said it would still be involved in the mobile space but conspicuously referred to the Streak 7 in the past tense, suggesting it was being phased out.

It’s a capitulation for Dell, which says it’s still dedicated to the mobile market, just not in the US.

Based on leaked slides that we’ve received, the Nook Color will be dropping to $199 by November 16th, but the $50 price savings ain’t all that B&N’s throwing your way. The Nook Color v1.4 update will bring along some pretty intense extras, including the addition of Hulu Plus, “millions of songs” from services like Rhapsody, Grooveshark, Pandora and MOG and a litany of new tailored apps (with Scrabble called out in particular).

∞ Apple stops Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia

The Federal Court has granted Apple an injunction to block tech rival Samsung from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia.
Apple is suing Samsung for patent infringement, arguing the firm “slavishly” copied its market-leading iPad tablet.
Justice Annabelle Bennett today said Apple had a prima facie case that Samsung had infringed two of its patents relating to touch screens and the gestures that control them.

Apple Inc rejected an offer from Samsung Electronics Co to settle their tablet computer dispute in Australia, possibly killing off the commercial viability of the South Korean firm’s new Galaxy tablet in that market.

Last week Samsung agreed to withdraw features from the Galaxy 10.1, but that isn’t enough for Apple, which claims that Samsung “slavishly” copied features from the iPhone and iPad for its own Galaxy devices.

∞ Quanta cuts back RIM contractors, Playbook to blame

Orders to Quanta from Rim are reported to have dropped substantially as the company struggles to cope with the excess inventory. At its earnings call last week company executives hinted that they would begin price promotions over the next two quarters to get the devices into end-users’ hands.

Quanta’s decision to cut staff and production suggests that Rim does not expect to clear its inventory before the end of its current financial year, which ends next

Verizon Wireless and Motorola Mobility announced Tuesday that Motorola’s Xoom tablet will ship through Verizon Wireless beginning Feb. 24, 2011. The device will cost $800 unsubsidized, though Verizon Wireless customers can get the tablet for $600 if they agree to a two-year customer agreement that costs at least $20 a month for access using Verizon Wireless’ 3G data network.
