Apple on Tuesday released iTunes 10.5, an update widely expected prior to Wednesday’s introduction of iOS 5. iTunes 10.5 is available for download from Apple’s Web site and through the Software Update system preference.

Music service Rhapsody on Monday announced plans to acquire Napster, most recently owned by Best Buy. Terms of the agreement were not announced, but Rhapsody indicated that Best Buy gets a minority stake in Rhapsody after the deal is done.

Talks have progressed because music industry insiders are said to be hopeful that a cloud streaming service, which would allow users to access their music from any Internet-connected device, will boost sagging music sales. This way, users would be able to listen to a large library of tracks without having to sync songs to various devices.

This is great news. I’m more interested in Apple’s implementation of music in the cloud than anything else.

Apple has reportedly finished work on its iTunes cloud music service and will launch it ahead of Google, it’s main competition in this market.

According to a report on Reuters, Apple’s service will allow users to store music on remote servers and access music via the Internet. Reuters says it has multiple sources that did not want to be named.

Google, who is also working on a cloud music service is running into some problems, according to the report.

∞ ∞ Report: Apple ordered 12 petabytes of storage

Storagenewsletter.com reports that Apple has ordered 12 petabytes of storage from Isilon Systems. Isilon, recently acquired by EMC, manufactures “scale-out storage” designed to be used by large enterprises, and has a client list that includes NBC, ABC, Paramount and many other companies.

“It’s probably the largest of its 1,500 customers recorded at the end of December, including 20% in Europe.”

The blog cites “an inside source at EMC” who indicates that Apple has ordered the storage to manage video downloads for customers using iTunes.

You knew it was going to happen. Someone was going to release an album recorded on the iPad using GarageBand.

Pop punk band The Ultramods on Monday released its latest album that was done using GarageBand for iPad’s eight-track recording studio. All of the instruments used to record the album come bundled in GarageBand, according to the band.

Even the vocals were recorded using the iPad’s built-in microphone.
