Apple Card gains advanced fraud protection in iOS 15

Starting with iOS 15, Apple Card owners can take advantage of a new Advanced Fraud Protection feature that is designed to keep ‌Apple Card‌ information more secure by changing the three-digit security code associated with the card on a regular basis.

From the relevant Apple support document:

  • Open the Wallet app and tap Apple Card.
  • Tap the card number icon, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
  • Scroll down to Advanced Fraud Protection and turn it on.

You’ll know your rotating security code is turned on when you see the clock icon next to your three-digit security code.

I did this, worked as claimed. Not clear how frequently the number is changed.

Advanced digital sensor system likely to come to Apple Watch

Hartley Charlton, MacRumors:

Rockley Photonics, an Apple supplier, has today unveiled an advanced digital sensor system that is likely to come to the Apple Watch to enable a wide range of new health tracking features.

And:

The company today revealed a full-stack, “clinic-on-the-wrist” digital health sensor system, enabling wearable devices to monitor multiple biomarkers, including core body temperature, blood pressure, body hydration, alcohol, lactate, and glucose trends, and more.

The technology uses a miniaturized chip solution with optical sensors that provide continuous, non-invasive monitoring of various biomarkers, in an attempt to overcome many of the challenges associated with wearable health monitoring and avoid the need for invasive sensors that must perforate the skin.

Apple is Rockley Photonics’ biggest customer. Not too much of a stretch to imagine these new sensors making their way into a future Apple Watch.

TSMC announces intention to build and operate an advanced semiconductor fab in the United States

This is not a rumor. It’s a press release from TSMC itself.

TSMC today announced its intention to build and operate an advanced semiconductor fab in the United States with the mutual understanding and commitment to support from the U.S. federal government and the State of Arizona.

As a reminder, TSMC is a chip fabricator with a long relationship with Apple, starting with the the A5 SoC back in 2011, and is said to be the chip fabricator behind the rumored ARM-based Mac (that last bit is a rumor).

Construction is planned to start in 2021 with production targeted to begin in 2024.

Can’t help but think about the fabled Foxconn plant in Wisconsin.

Apple awards Corning first Advanced Manufacturing Fund investment

From Apple’s press release:

Apple today announced Corning Incorporated will receive $200 million from Apple’s new Advanced Manufacturing Fund as part of the company’s commitment to foster innovation among American manufacturers. The investment will support Corning’s R&D, capital equipment needs and state-of-the-art glass processing. Corning’s 65-year-old Harrodsburg facility has been integral to the 10-year collaboration between these two innovative companies and will be the focus of Apple’s investment.

Amazon Polly turns text into “lifelike speech”

Amazon:

Amazon Polly is a service that turns text into lifelike speech, allowing you to create applications that talk, and build entirely new categories of speech-enabled products. Polly’s Text-to-Speech (TTS) service uses advanced deep learning technologies to synthesize natural sounding human speech.

Follow the headline link and click on the various links to get a sense of the voices. Start with Joanna (Standard). Pretty good, but there’s still a bit of uncanny valley there, perhaps in the subtle hesitations you likely wouldn’t expect in someone else’s speech.

Now listen to Joanna (Neural). To me, this sounds much more realistic and is the machine learning version of the same voice.

Good enough to fool you into thinking it’s a real person? Certainly getting closer.

Apple introduces 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max processors

Apple:

Apple today unveiled the completely reimagined MacBook Pro powered by the all-new M1 Pro and M1 Max — the first pro chips designed for the Mac.

And:

The new MacBook Pro also features a stunning Liquid Retina XDR display, a wide range of ports for advanced connectivity, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, and the best audio system in a notebook.

And:

Its all-new aluminum enclosure optimizes internal space for more performance and features. The enclosure is precisely machined around an advanced thermal system that can move 50 percent more air than the previous generation, even at lower fan speeds. The thermal design enables MacBook Pro to deliver phenomenal sustained performance while staying cool and quiet. And because of the efficiency of Apple silicon, the fans never even have to turn on for most tasks users perform every day.

Interested in buying a fully loaded 16″ MacBook Pro? A model with M1 Max, 64GB unified memory, and 8TB SSD storage will set you back $6,099 and won’t get to you before mid-December (as of this writing).

The 14” MacBook Pro starts at $1999. The 16” MacBook Pro starts at $2499.

The low end 14″ and the mid-priced 16″ are still available for delivery next week. All other models are pushed out to November at the earliest.

Introducing M1 Pro and M1 Max: the most powerful chips Apple has ever built

Apple:

The CPU in M1 Pro and M1 Max delivers up to 70 percent faster CPU performance than M1, so tasks like compiling projects in Xcode are faster than ever. There’s a lot to process here. The claims are bold. Looking forward to seeing the real-world results, benchmarks, video reviews. Most interesting to me will be the GPU tests. Can a new MacBook Pro with M1 Max compete with a desktop PC with a high-end discrete GPU? Or does that remain an unfair comparison?

Apple introduces third generation of the original AirPods

Apple formally announces Apple Watch Series 7 preorders starting this Friday

Apple:

Apple today announced Apple Watch Series 7, featuring the largest and most advanced Apple Watch display ever — and a reengineered Always-On Retina display with significantly more screen area and thinner borders — will be available to order beginning Friday, October 8, at 5 a.m. PDT and available in stores starting Friday, October 15.

Given the steadily slipping shipping dates of the iPhone Pro (as of this writing, the iPhone I ordered shows a delivery date of November 4-11), and the fact that Series 7 pre-orders have already been pushed back more than 3 weeks (the announcement was September 14th), if you want a Series 7, I’d get on it as soon as the doors open.

Intel breaks ground on $20 billion Arizona chip plants

Reuters:

The $20 billion plants – dubbed Fab 52 and Fab 62 – will bring the total number of Intel factories at its campus in Chandler, Arizona, to six. They will house Intel’s most advanced chipmaking technology and play a central role in the Santa Clara, California-based company’s effort to regain its lead in making the smallest, fastest chips by 2025, after having fallen behind rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd

Intel is betting heavily on this re-roll of its chipmaking process.

TSMC, in the meanwhile:

Intel rival TSMC has also purchased land to build its first U.S. campus in Phoenix, not far from Intel’s location, where TSMC plans up to six chip factories.

From TSMC’s announced plans:

The initial fab is relatively modest by industry standards, with a planned output of 20,000 wafers – each of which contains thousands of chips – every month using the company’s most sophisticated 5 nanometre semiconductor manufacturing technology.

Both of these will bring this part of the supply chain onto US shores, though materials that are used in the fabrication process, like silicon, germanium, etc., are still critical path.

Apple held its California streaming event on Tuesday, introducing a number of new products including new iPhones, iPads, Apple Watch, and Apple Fitness+. Here is a breakdown of each product.

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max

Apple today introduced iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a smartphone. Redesigned inside and out, both models introduce an all-new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion featuring an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, making the touch experience faster and more responsive. The pro camera system gets its biggest advancement ever with new Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto cameras that capture stunning photos and video, powered by the unmatched performance of A15 Bionic, more powerful than the leading competition. I’ve long been a fan of the iPad mini, especially for travel. It’s so compact, yet very powerful for almost everything you would want an iPad to do. That 80 percent performance increase only solidifies what the iPad mini can do for you.

iPad

The narrower borders allow the display to maximize screen area, while minimally changing the dimensions of the watch itself. The design of Apple Watch Series 7 is refined with softer, more rounded corners, and the display has a unique refractive edge that makes full-screen watch faces and apps appear to seamlessly connect with the curvature of the case. Apple Watch Series 7 also features a user interface optimized for the larger display, offering greater readability and ease of use, plus two unique watch faces — Contour and Modular Duo — designed specifically for the new device. With the improvements to the display, users benefit from the same all-day 18-hour battery life,1 now complemented by 33 percent faster charging.

The only time my Apple Watch leaves my arm is to charge it for an hour once a day. I rely on my watch to track my sleep, fitness, and I also love the fall detection, heart monitoring and other safety features this device brings to my life. I can’t see a reason why I wouldn’t always wear my Apple Watch.

Apple Fitness+

Apple today announced that Apple Fitness+, the first fitness service built entirely around Apple Watch, will introduce guided Meditation, a simple way to practice mindfulness anywhere, anytime, and Pilates, a new low-impact, body-conditioning workout type, on September 27. Fitness+ is also introducing a new program — Workouts to Get Ready for Snow Season — featuring and designed with two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time world champion skier Ted Ligety, along with Fitness+ trainer Anja Garcia. Inspired by winter sports, the program will help build strength, balance, and endurance so users can have more fun on the slopes, all the way to the last run.

I haven’t tried Apple Fitness+ much, yet. Every time I see something about Apple Fitness+, I tell myself that I need to start using it for my exercising. This is my time.

Apple issues emergency security updates to close a spyware flaw

Apple issued emergency software updates for a critical vulnerability in its products on Monday after security researchers uncovered a flaw that allows highly invasive spyware from Israel’s NSO Group to infect anyone’s iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac computer without so much as a click.

Apple’s security team had worked around the clock to develop a fix since Tuesday, after researchers at Citizen Lab, a cybersecurity watchdog organization at the University of Toronto, discovered that a Saudi activist’s iPhone had been infected with an advanced form of spyware from NSO.

You’ve no doubt seen the update (unless you are running a beta, even an iOS 14.7 beta).

Fantastic thread on the most important machine in Apple’s universe

Back in July, I posted about a machine made by ASML, The most important machine in Apple’s universe.

The complex machine is widely acknowledged as necessary for making the most advanced chips, an ability with geopolitical implications. The most important machine in Apple’s universe

The machine is made by ASML Holding, based in Veldhoven. Its system uses a different kind of light to define ultrasmall circuitry on chips, packing more performance into the small slices of silicon. The tool, which took decades to develop and was introduced for high-volume manufacturing in 2017, costs more than $150 million.
