Olympus Unveils TG-5 ‘Tough’ Camera with Brand New Sensor and 4K Video
The well-regarded Olympus TG-4 is being replaced by a more powerful model—say hello to the TG-5. Olympus’ latest ‘tough’ camera packs a better sensor, better processor, and 4K video capability into a rough and tumble shell that is waterproof, crushproof, shockproof, freezeproof, and dustproof.
The big news with the TG-4 was the news that Olympus had finally integrated RAW capture into their Tough line. This time, they’ve upped the ante yet again with an all-new backlit 12MP CMOS sensor and dual quad core TruePic VIII image processor that can handle 4K.
That sensor/processor combo sits behind the same 25-100mm equivalent f/2.0 lens, and promises to deliver “the highest image quality of any Tough model to date.” Here’s a closer look:
As with the previous tough model, this puppy is waterproof (to 50 feet/15 meters), crushproof (to 220 pounds/100 kilograms), shockproof (from 7 feet/2.1 meters), freezeproof (to 14°F/-10°C), and dustproof.
And while you’re out shooting your adventures in 25 feet of freezing cold water, the camera will use its built-in Field Sensor System to track movement and environmental data using a GPS sensor, manometer (pressure sensor for tracking altitude and water depth), compass, and temperature sensor.
Finally, the camera also comes with several accessories to help get more versatility out of the tough little monster. You can attach the Fisheye Converter lens for 130° field of view, the Teleconverter lens for 170mm focal length, the LG-1 LED Light Guide and FD-1 Flash Diffuser for better macro photography lighting, and the PT-058 Underwater Housing to extend underwater use to 147 feet/45 meters:
