Samsung Electronics filed for a “Bixby Reminder” trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The filing was made on Thursday and seemingly describes one feature of Bixby, the company’s upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) assistant that’s heavily rumored to debut with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus this spring. Unlike some of Samsung’s recent trademark filings in Europe, this one doesn’t go into many details regarding the product whose name the company is trying to trademark. However, Bixby Reminder sounds like a relatively self-explanatory feature as it suggests Bixby will be able to remind its users about various tasks, activities, and appointments, much like other contemporary AI assistants do.

While it doesn’t describe Bixby Reminder in great detail, Samsung’s filing does state that this functionality could be available on more than just smartphones as it mentions tablets and personal computers. Some of Samsung’s recent trademark applications also mentioned Bixby in the context of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, seemingly suggesting that the South Korean tech giant is not just looking to create a capable AI assistant for its upcoming flagship phones but is actually planning to develop an entire ecosystem around Bixby. The EUIPO is currently examining the company’s application and will likely approve it in the coming months. Apart from the term Bixby and its variations, the Seoul-based smartphone maker recently trademarked terms like Bixby Vision and Bixby Pay which are also rumored to be some of the many features of the company’s upcoming AI assistant. Among other things, Bixby will allegedly be able to make payments and scan its surroundings using the Galaxy S8 camera.

Bixby was reportedly developed by Viv Labs, an AI startup acquired by Samsung back in October. The assistant will allegedly be integrated into all of Samsung’s apps that come pre-installed on the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. Samsung’s upcoming flagship duo is currently rumored to be unveiled on March 29 before hitting the market in mid-April, so more information on both devices and their AI assistant will likely follow in the coming weeks. Following its commercial debut, Bixby will possibly roll out to Samsung’s older smartphones like the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge.
