Samsung Electronics has filed for a “Samsung Hello” trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The filing was made on Wednesday and apparently relates to software for personal computers and mobile devices designed to aggregate and organize various types of content. The company revealed that Samsung Hello is able to personalize content streams and even accomplish other tasks like schedule reminders and appointments and even access information like phone numbers. Finally, the filing describes the feature as being capable of voice recognition.
All of this implies that Samsung Hello is some kind of an AI assistant or a similar solution designed to accomplish tasks users tell it to accomplish. Given how another AI companion called Bixby is all but confirmed to be featured in the upcoming Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, it’s possible that Samsung Hello isn’t a standalone assistant, but an extension of Bixby. However, even if that’s true, it doesn’t seem likely that the service will launch alongside Bixby seeing how Samsung is only now trying the trademark it. The process of getting a trademark approved with the EUIPO usually takes months, and given how Samsung’s upcoming pair of flagships is expected to be unveiled next month, don’t be surprised if the company doesn’t mention Samsung Hello during the unveil event.
Regardless, this trademark is yet another piece of evidence suggesting that the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer is committing more resources to artificial intelligence and related technologies. Previous trademark filings made by the company indicated that Bixby may actually be available on computers, tablets, and even Internet of Things (IoT) devices like smart TVs and connected speakers in the future, and the Samsung Hello filing is worded in a similarly comprehensive manner. Samsung’s latest financial report also indicated that the Seoul-based tech giant will turn to advanced software like AI assistants to differentiate its upcoming products. All things considered, even if the Samsung Hello trademark filing doesn’t amount to anything, expect to see a lot of innovation from Samsung in the AI segment in the future.
