A wide range of improvements to existing tools. And some incredible new ones.

Every single tool from the original Pixelmator has been improved or enhanced in some way in Pixelmator Pro, adding powerful new features and refining the user experience. From a brand new painting engine that supports realistic, dual-texture brushes to an extensive collection of color adjustments with full support for editing RAW images, SVG support, a nondestructive editing workflow, a new light appearance, and more.

  • Hundreds of additions and improvements.

Pixelmator Pro includes hundreds of major additions and smaller thoughtful improvements at every turn to the image editing tools, the interface, and the image editing engine.

  • A brand new nondestructive editing workflow.

Thanks to the new nondestructive editing workflow, whenever you make a change — say you resize any layer, apply a color adjustment, or a series of effects — you can go back to fine-tune or reset those changes at any time.

New Editing Engine

Blazing fast performance. Powered by the latest Mac graphics technologies.

The Pixelmator Pro editing engine is written from the ground up on Metal, Apple’s unique hardware-accelerated graphics API. Built to take full advantage of the latest Mac graphics technologies, Pixelmator Pro squeezes maximum performance out of every Mac and brings staggeringly fast GPU-powered, 64-bit image editing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pixelmator Pro?

Pixelmator Pro is an incredibly powerful, beautiful, and easy-to-use image editor for Mac. Just like the original Pixelmator, it’s designed to make the most advanced professional image editing tools accessible to everyone.

Why did you create Pixelmator Pro?

For the same reason we created the original Pixelmator — we love image editing, we love the Mac, and we love making apps. We wanted to take all the knowledge we’ve gained over the many years of developing Pixelmator and create something totally new.

Couldn’t you just update the original Pixelmator?

Not really. There were a few reasons for this. One: when Pixelmator Pro came out, a significant number of people would not have been able to run it as the app is built using new technologies that require a relatively new Mac. Two: Some of the changes might have been too drastic for a lot of people. This is a complete redesign and we didn’t want to just replace a beloved app with a drastically redesigned new one, even if it will feel very familiar to almost every Pixelmator user. For those two reasons (and a few others), it made the most sense to release Pixelmator Pro as a brand new app.

What’s going to happen to Pixelmator? Will you keep updating it?

We have now removed Pixelmator Classic from App Store and will eventually stop updating it. Anyone who has already bought it will be able to redownload it, of course – just like any other Mac app. And we can still ship updates to it, even if the app isn’t available for sale. What’s more, before we retire it, we’ve also made sure that, even without updates, it will work reliably for a while longer for anyone who isn’t quite ready to make the switch. And as Pixelmator Pro fully supports original Pixelmator files, shapes, gradients, brushes, and layer styles, whenever you feel like upgrading, you’ll be able to switch without any trouble at all.

Can I try Pixelmator Pro without buying it?

Absolutely. We have a completely free, 7-day trial that we’ve extended to 15 days for owners of the original Pixelmator. You can download it here.

What are your future plans for Pixelmator Pro?

We want to make it more powerful, more full-featured, and even easier to use. Since it was released over four years ago, Pixelmator Pro has already received 13 incredible major updates and we have no plans to slow down. Our roadmap below includes some of the most exciting features planned for future updates and things we’ve already added.
