Well, that was quick.
Less than one month ago, Tesla announced a software update for owners of its Model S and Model X cars. The update included a feature called Summon, with which the car will open one’s garage door, enter or exit the garage, park itself, shut down, and close the garage door. The function works through an owner’s smartphone or a button on the Tesla key.
On Wednesday (Feb. 3), private developer Allen Wong published an update to his own app that allows Model S owners to access the Summon feature from an Apple Watch. You can see the app in action below:
Wong created the Remote S for Tesla app under the Rego Apps brand, and is credited with earlier combining Tesla functionality with Siri, the voice-activated assistant found on iOS devices. According to Wong, when using Summon via the Apple Watch, Tesla owners will no longer need to have their key fob within 39 feet (12 meters) of the car.
So far, the Summon feature is designed to act as a testing phase ahead of Tesla’s planned rollout that will allow customers to summon their cars from anywhere, nationwide. “Eventually, your Tesla will be able to drive anywhere across the country to meet you, charging itself along the way,” said the company’s release last month. ”It will sync with your calendar to know exactly when to arrive.”
