Rhetorical question, have you ever actually had the opportunity to use a jailbroken iPhone? The capabilities that it enables are the things that should have come standard on the iPhone to begin with. The differences are vast, beautiful, and competitive. For instance, there is a text messaging app that sells for $13. I purchased this application. That's $13 Apple could have made. This application fixes all the fundamental flaws with Apple's text messaging app. This is competition. They have a better product. I purchased it from them lawfully. I modified the handheld device that I own (iPhone) so that I could install this application. It's all really straightforward. If I put a set of custom wheels on a brand-new vehicle that I bought, it might void the warranty, but is it a sin. You are like the person who believes it's wrong she meets sacrificed to idols, or maybe a Pharisee. In your world everything is a sin. open your eyes, Apple is not God, jailbreaking is not sin, and the idols are meaningless and lifeless gods.

oh! I found milliamp and emailed them about it. because I was missing part of the rubber trim thing, it let dust get in there (or at least that's what they told me was causing the problem). I haven't sent it quite yet (just haven't done it yet), but it's 12 bucks! i think there is shipping too, but they sounded pretty legit IMO. hope that helps bc $12 vs $200 is well worth it!!!

I run an ad blocker – I tend not to block too much except
doubleclick.net, pointroll.com eyewonder.com and a few
site specific urls.

If the ads inhibit the site coming up when I view it. i.e.
the browser presents a blank page waiting from some crap
from an ad site, I tend to kill it.

I also tend to have javascript blocked as well

I'm not sure I like the idea of even calling ipad vs. iphone vs. OS X different operating systems. It's essentially the same software with slightly different API stacks available. I expect as the processing power, hard drive space, and ram increases on these new devices, the differences in theses stacks will start to fade away.

The point though is valid; the key question here is design. When designing a Mac app, you're looking to make a collaborative player in a wider desktop environment. When you're looking at ipad / iphone / ipod development, essentially you're transforming the hardware into a single purpose experience. What can we take this device and turn it into? When you look at the form factor of iphone vs ipad, you can get different answers or at least different spins on the same idea.

@Dave Camp, new iPhone OS is to be previewed now, in March, not at WWDC…that´s what Apple has been doing every year. If not, how can devs beta test it? Iphone 3.0 had 6 or 7 betas…imagine if they only released the SDK in June….

I have Click2Flash installed but I do not use an ad blocker. I use Click2Flash for the reason stated above the ads themselves hog my processor and bandwidth.

I have actually bought things through clicking links here but they seem relevant as opposed to being served up ads for penis pills and some woman who wants to hook up this evening located only a few kilometres from my home.

Jim could put the site behind a Pay Wall which means we would get less and probably pay more for the content. I would quite happily pay as I do for John Gruber's content via a PayPal fee which then gave me access to the full RSS feed instead of just summaries and to be honest for the kind of news this site provides me with I would be happy to pay for that feature here as well. It may not be for everyone but I do like that model personally.

I can tether my iPhone here in Australia and yet it isn't a huge deal but I will be picking up the iPad WiFi version instead of the 3G version but that is more to do with the fact I already pay for a data plan for my iPhone which is my primary mobile device, my iPad isn't the device that I will commute day to day with so I don't need a wireless connection for it and anywhere I travel more than 40 minutes away will have WiFi. I guess that it is easy to say this from the point of view of someone who has this capability but really it isn't a game changer.

Tethering is made out to be this amazing thing, I have the access to it and have used it a handful of times, sure it may have bigger applications to other people but to fixate on this or focus on the lack of tethering of the iPhone to the iPad as this being a detractor to the iPad is a minor stumbling block at best considering the huge amount of WiFi hotspots even here in Australia means if I do want to go and sit down somewhere I can still check my emails on something bigger than my iPhone.

I wonder about apps that don't need a 1024×768 full screen though. eg a twitter client. They're going to just look silly that big. Surely iPhone OS 4.x has to provide some kind of Dashboard/Widget mode for small apps that don't need a full screen.

I block ads because they are becoming increasingly more invasive. I move my mouse over an ad on the way to the "close window" button, suddenly I have "Party Poker" opening up a new window, or some ad expands to fill most of the window and start playing a video about some incredibly wonderful product which I don't care to learn about.

John Gruber does things "the right way" on his blog: no banner ads, but he does post "Thanks to this week's sponsor…". From memory, I bought "TouchPad" and "Instapaper" iPhone apps due to being mentioned on Daring Fireball.

I also try to use affiliate links for blog sites that I enjoy reading.

There's a lot that can be kept in common between an iPhone app and an iPad app, even if you're completely redesigning it. All the data models, most of the controllers, all network protocol stuff… I'm not suggesting it is (or should be) just a 'reskinning' (those tend to go poorly) but if you've got a twitter app or a web-aware recipe app for the iphone, you're not rewriting the whole thing from the ground up.

Close. I'd say they will be unified in whatever OS release they preview at WWDC this year, the dates for which have not been announced yet.

I'm guessing there will be one or more minor iPhone OS updates before WWDC (possibly all 3.1.x), 3.2 for the iPad, and then a preview of the big release at WWDC. The final release of whatever that is (4.0, 4.1?) would ship a few months later so devs have enough time to update/unify their apps.

I am tired of websites that think they have to use every java script and other things that suck up bandwith and many time have caused my browser to lock up. I use a ad blocker because of the endless popups that some sites use. I wish I did not have to just like antivirus software. Both suck up processer time. I just wish I could block the annoying mortgage ads.

I understand thouroghly the need for advertising revenue. Simple ads good, bouncing bs ads are simply annoying.

I think the missing element may be the balance of ads vs. content. This page is a prime example. A two paragraph post, essentially just a link to an Ars article, yet there are still 15 ads + the Bodega "thing" that is exceedingly annoying. I don't have any problem with people monetizing their website, but I do think that the ratio of ads to content should be brought back to reality. If you run a website, take a minute to think about how the ads affects the experience of your readers.

Seriously? You don’t think that statement is even a *little* naive?

Can you fathom how much advertising provides for us, directly and indirectly? Think about it tonight as you watch “Big Bang Theory” on CBS. Think about the ads that pay for that show directly so *you* don’t have to.

Think about your local newspaper that costs 50 cents. Would you buy it if it cost $10/day? Because that’s what would happen if it were ad free. Or your TIME magazine subscription or the radio you listen to or any number of other ad driven things you seem to take for granted.

Yeah – advertising is annoying and there’s *way* too much of it. But the facile “find some other way to make money” statement is just sticking your head in the sand,

Those of us out here trying to make a living informing our listeners and readers can’t afford to do that.

That would have been too literal and would have limited its usefulness. They're probably going to air it many more times between now and April 3rd, as well as making it one of a series. The purpose of ads is not to entertain, as such, and certainly not to please US, "the faithful." And they are meant to inform JUST ENOUGH so as to incite interest and ACTION in the form of the viewer deciding to find out more by visiting a website or Apple store.

Though not of "Superbowl ad" caliber, this ad did have a comparable level of impact and artistry.

I'm also glad that Steve could make it to the Oscars to see one of his "children" win some awards.

I charge a flat rate per month. Obviously, the advertisers are happy when they are viewed a lot and when the ads are clicked through, but I don't make any more either way.

How? exactly how the hell do you pay for costs without either advertising revenues or charging you to read the site?

Are you going to PAY to read the loop? No, no you are not. You know this. We know this. As soon as the Loop instituted a paywall, you're gone.

So tell us, exactly what is this miraculous business model you have for the Loop to make money? Surely you have one, right?

Secondly, without advertising, exactly, how, pray tell, does a company tell people what it has for sale?

I didn't start blocking ads until content providers started plastering 60% of my screen space with moving flashing ads and loud autostart video.

As for the fate of Conde Nast and others, boo freakin' hoo- drown in your own greed. If you go out of business, someone else will be stupid enough to try the same unworkable business model.
