A genius HomePod hack

Ouch. Pretty, pretty good. [H/T MacKungFu]

  1. This is great, except for the fact that Conan (and many others) don’t know the difference between the Echo and Alexa.

    Echo = HomePod
    Alexa = Siri

  2. It’s a comedy sketch on a late night show, not a business news story on a cable news program. Have some fun! Dummy? I mean, really … lighten up a bit.

  3. Some of that is probably deliberate. I know the difference but choose to confuse the terms. It’s a lot easier to say “we have Amazon Alexa in each room of our house” then saying “we use Alexa, I have an Echo in the kitchen, echo dots in each bedroom and we might get a newer Echo soon with the smart home hub built in, oh and we have two fire TVs, each with Alexa, plus there’s a Fire TV Stick I travel with which also does Alexa”.

    It’s just easier to “have Alexa”.

  4. I see your point… and when Alexa is everywhere it won’t matter much what you say about the device that you’re talking into. Still, I doubt Conan and others know what you know.

  5. I would imagine there were some on his staff who knew, but knew better than to get in the weeds. This is a great conversation, as we’re both right!

  6. Still, when someone goes to buy a product, they don’t say “I want to buy Alexa.” They have to know that Alexa is part of various retail products. Same with Siri and somehow, without getting into which is better, I like the idea of selling a product that contains the speech software at this point. At least until such software is embedded everywhere.
