Gunn posted this on Twitter and not only is it an interesting breakdown of the jobs on a film set but many of them are further linked to descriptions of the job. So, if you’ve ever wondered what the Best Boy Grip does and whether you’re qualified for the position, this is the chart for you.
Well, the chart isn‘t very accurate. For instance, the Sound Designer doesn‘t belong to the Production Sound department.
I clicked on “milliner” because I don’t know what one was… and it doesn’t have a listing. The link takes me to a generic page. Unlike “story editor” which has a page.
Speaking as someone completely ignorant on the subject, that surprises me a lot. What department does the Sound Designer belong to?
Post-production. On the set there are just a production sound mixer / location sound recordist, one or two boom operators, and a sound assistant / utility guy. Smaller productions often have a sound mixer and a boom operator only.
In any case, the sound designer definitely belongs to the sound editing crowd (post-production).
That’s a hat maker. Very special. You’ll find those only on large-scale, historical film shoots or commercials.
