I use a separate account for all my ‘iCloud’ functions and never give that to anyone for any reason. iTunes + stores are all under a separate account. And everything gets a unique, painfully long and complicated password. Memorize your iCloud PW and never use it for anything else.
And always navigate to websites from a validated link, never email links.
At least your wife wasn’t harmed by the S.O.B. who stole her iPhone. There are always going to be those who have to steal what others have. They’re not going to have to rot in hell if they beg forgiveness before they die. They may never have to pay retribution in their present life. Maybe you can wish upon them that misfortune that happened to your wife. Just forget it and move on and know there are still people in this world who give instead of only take. Your wife is far more precious than the stolen iPhone.

1Password will prevent this error.
When you see a login prompt, even if you know the password hit command-. Because 1Password doesn’t recognize the site, it won’t fill the username and password.
That was an excellent way to spend 21 minutes and 45 seconds.
He mentioned it wouldn’t auto-populate, so he was using some kind of password manager, but didn’t connect the dots and worked around it.
The warning signs are all there and visible, but it’s easy to trick 99% of people in the right moment. I was going to add, “why would you get a text, anyway?”—that was the first thing that occurred to me, but maybe I’m slightly more paranoid.
