Last Jedi Director used his MacBook Air to prevent spoiler leaks

Screen Rant:

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson: “I typed Episode VIII out on a MacBook Air. For security it was ‘air-gapped’ — never connected to the internet. I carried it around and used it for nothing except writing the script. I kept it in a safe at Pinewood Studios. I think my producer was constantly horrified I would leave it in a coffee shop.”

I bet a lot of people in his industry do similar things, especially for blockbusters.

  • Seems excessive, but the Star Wars script is a big risk so it’s certainly not crazily so. I wonder if he kept an air gapped hard drive at home to backup to?

He must have had a backup strategy, somewhere.

I think hackers would have happily tried, and succeeded, to steal it for the money they’d make. The way he did it would have been the only secure way to do it.

      • Yeah, that script would have been worth a lot of money to whoever got to it first.

It’s less about the computer and more about air gapping. Frankly, if you had an air gapped Windows 95 computer, you would be, for the most part safe.

Yes, I know there are ways to hack air gapped machines. But realistically, the kinds of groups that can hack air gapped machines are the kind of groups that will have no problem hacking a Macbook Air either. Typically, they’re less interested in Star Wars scripts and more interested in nuclear facilities or Star Wars missile defenses.

I still use an old copy of QuickBooks running in Windows 95; I turned off the internet connection in Fusion, so it’s relatively secure (the computer it’s on is networked, obviously, but I trust my Mac more than Windows).

I saw this and immediately wondered if this is what it’s like to be Stephen King? You have to have a computer that doesn’t do anything but word processing.

    Hope he used file vault.
