Amazon public relations: Yes, Prime Video app still coming to Apple TV this year

Josh Centers, TidBITS:

At this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple and Amazon finally announced that we would be able to watch Amazon video natively on the Apple TV by the end of the year.

And:

But it’s December, and Amazon Prime Video for the Apple TV remains vaporware. Is it still due in 2017? Surprisingly, yes. Amazon public relations told me, “Thanks for checking in. Yes, you can expect the launch this year.”

This report jibes with last week’s report that the Apple TV app was being beta tested by Amazon employees.

  • I’m betting, Thursday/Friday along with the premier of Season 2 of The Grand Tour.

    • seems like a minor show to hitch to. i only know of it because a friend is a car guy, other than that it’s never shown up on any radar. even Transparent gets more mentions in daily life on NPR, etc.

      • Well, nearly 2 million people watched last seasons first episode of The Grand Tour last year, becoming Amazon’s largest show (The Man in the High Castle had 640k viewers). Granted the season had some lackluster shows in it early on, the later shows were much better.

Given all the incidents on the production of the second season, including the accident Richard Hammond was in which will be featured on the first episode, it could have even higher viewing numbers then before (Not to mention it sounds like a lot of the terrible segments of the show will be removed/rejiggered).

If this season gets closer to the grove the trio had while on Top Gear, globally they can improve their numbers even more.

Ideally, it would be better, however, if Amazon removed it from being part of Prime (I think they can pull in Ad dollars to support the investment and use it as a vehicle, cough cough, to promote Prime shows). Top Gear had over 350 million viewers globally.

        • it would be better, however, if Amazon removed it from being part of Prime…

          Interesting idea.

      • Hmm, I see the tile in the AppleTV App Store has the Grand Tour logo with it, so I think I’ll officially say, “Called it!” 😉

  • I can’t wait to stop using Amazon Prime Video through our Panasonic Viera’s interface.

Any thoughts on the impact of an Amazon Apple TV app on Netflix subscriptions?

Having the Amazon app will be nice. I prefer the Apple TV to the Android SmartTV app.

Impact on Netflix? IMO, basically zero. The AppleTV has a small market share. Amazon has a few interesting shows, but Netflix has way more.
