Airbnb acquires Accomable

Airbnb said on Thursday it acquired London startup Accomable to expand home-renting opportunities for people with disabilities, the latest expansion as Airbnb grows its global travel business.

With Airbnb’s money, they should be able to build out the Accomable business.

Say goodbye to even more affordable housing.

AirBnB can be great with a little regulation to curb its abuse. Limit the number of days in a year that any individual property can be rented out. Block rentals from corporate-owned properties.

Essentially, make sure that AirBnB remains a way for home owners to make some extra cash, without giving them a way to make as much money or more than they could on long term leases.

The biggest threat here isn’t AirBnB, but the greedy people who are exploiting it.

I could live with that. But even with such regulations in place, I’m fairly sure that speculators would still find a way to game the service.

I’m sure there are people smarter than you or me who could come up with more loophole-resistant rules. And if abuses are discovered, simply amend the rules to block them.

I think the key is to establish a set of guiding principles, and then create a framework whereby AirBnB (and any similar businesses) would be expected to continuously update their policies as necessary to abode by those principles.

Trouble is, guiding principles and regulatory oversight for consumer protection are not at all popular with our ruling majority.

If we had to assume that Republicans would forever remain in power, we might as well pack it up and move to Canada. I’m not quite that pessimistic yet.

            Don’t think I haven’t considered it.

This is our country. If anyone should move out, it’s the ones trying to undermine what it stands for.
