“Tweeting made easier” – Twitter lifts the 140 character limitation

Twitter:

In September, we launched a test that expanded the 140 character limit so every person around the world could express themselves easily in a Tweet. Our goal was to make this possible while ensuring we keep the speed and brevity that makes Twitter, Twitter. Looking at all the data, we’re excited to share we’ve achieved this goal and are rolling the change out to all languages where cramming was an issue.

As a result, your timeline reading experience should not substantially change, you’ll still see about the same amount of Tweets in your timeline.

Twitter says it probably won’t affect your timeline much but that depends entirely on who you follow. I expect my timeline will explode in size.

Both the native Twitter app for iOS and Tweetbot do not have the ability to Tweet beyond 140 characters. I am able to do so on the Twitter website, so it isn’t my account.

  • too bad they never figured out how to exclude URLs and user IDs instead. and editing.

    • Yes, and Twitter wouldn’t have to explain their move away from 140. It’s a controversy that seems like it will blow over, but it’s unnecessary for brand already on its heels.

A new Moore’s Law will emerge where the number of Twitter characters will double every two years.

1 Delete Account 2 Stop following tweets 3 Go have a nice day.

I am delighted with this development. Longer tweets mean more tediousness and more screeds and rants than ever, thus less eventual user happiness. I would be delighted to see this entire platform sink like MySpace. Twitter is for twits.

    • Where do you rank FB?

By keeping it to mostly my friends, locking down my FB account, and using content blockers I see a very manageable FB feed.

I take your point, and we can’t stop social media because it is fun for people. But as much as I’ve tried I have found Twitter to be a morass of pure self promotion and rants. I’m down to following maybe 20 people there. Obviously Twitter is run by idiots, so it has that “going for it” in terms of my wish to see its demise. Finally, almost none of my friends is active on Twitter; many are active on FB.
