Interesting survey on dialects and what words mean depending on where you live in the US. Apparently, as a Canadian, I talk like people from Spokane, Boise, and Salt Lake City. Thanks to my friend John Welch for pointing me to this.

I love things like this. I talk like people in New York, Yonkers and Paterson. That doesn’t surprise me: I was born in New York, as were both my parents. But it’s been 40 years since I lived there, with fairly long stops in Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Midwest. But the language instincts I picked up as a child still cling to me.

Do you happen to know what the penalty is for shooting a fricaseeing rabbit without a fricaseeing rabbit license?

I do. It’s watching Casper the Friendly Ghost on a repeating loop.

Apparently Devil’s Night is a dead giveaway.

  • Correctly pegged me as south-eastern North Carolina. I’ve only been living in NYC for a year and i’m never going to lose my warm, southern accent!
