Goodbye Uncanny Valley

This is an amazing look at the state of the art in computer graphics, movie CGI.

From the Vimeo page:

It’s 2017 and computer graphics have conquered the Uncanny Valley, that strange place where things are almost real… but not quite. After decades of innovation, we’re at the point where we can conjure just about anything with software. The battle for photoreal CGI has been won, so the question is… what happens now?

I found the whole thing riveting.

We are so very close to a world filled with conjured realities that are indistinguishable from real life. When that becomes our reality, what then?

The uncanny valley hasn’t really been a problem with environments for a while now, but they still can’t nail human faces, especially the eyes. They’ve gotten much better, but still, creepiness remains.

    • The Cappy

In Rogue One, I think the most uncanny thing was seeing Peter Cushing as a clumsy actor. 😉

      • Mo

Not to mention game-character Carrie Fisher. The valley still exists.

        • The Cappy

Of the three CG people, the lady in white robes didn’t bother me (partly, I think, because she always seemed kind of creepy), Fisher bothered me a little, and Cushing bothered me a LOT. But LOL, “game character Carrie Fisher”… now I’m gonna have that in my head every time I see that movie 😉

          • Mo

It’s pretty much all I can remember from the movie at this point.

In a story that was essentially about watching dominoes fall, their supposed added value was creepy cartoon characters.

Thinks have improved amazingly over the last few years. And it’s possible that if they’d done characters we weren’t already familiar with, it wouldn’t have been a problem. But yeah, you’re right. The uncanny valley is a very jarring place to go.

            It ain’t done yet.

    • this short was primarily in regards to cinema, and i’m feature film photorealistic human faces, including eyes, is a thing now.

  • While this was a good overview of the current state of the art, I find the premise that this video is predicated on incorrect. We are still in the uncanny valley–CGI looks almost real, but not quite.
