Uber London loses licence to operate

Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

TfL concluded the ride-hailing app firm was not fit and proper to hold a London private hire operator licence.

I really don’t understand this decision. Uber and Lyft and wonderful services for the consumer and should be supported.

They fucked with the regulator. And they’re shit services for their staff, and not great for customers who are assaulted. Anyways, they’ll appeal, they’ll comply, all will continue except Uber will be respecting the bloody law,

I like Lyft (Uber can go die in a fire…) but I’m a little tired of the stance that because something is new and useful they don’t have to follow laws and regulations and that we should ignore any downsides to them.

We went through this in Seattle and still are – is it OK to insist on one set of rules and regs for regular taxis (insurance requirement, etc) while exempting Uber/Lyft and others because the drivers are not technically employees? Can the employees, er, drivers band together and collectively bargain? etc.

I hope Uber and Lyft just vanish completely from London. London has the very best by far cabbies and taxi service in the world. It takes years for a London cabbie to qualify for the job and he does his job professionally and better than anywhere else in the world. Uber and Lyft and other totally unqualified driver services do not belong in London (I don’t feel this way about Paris or New York or other other cities where there is little differentiation between taxi drivers and Uber and Lyft drivers. But London is different. I’m delighted with this decision and I hope it sticks.

    • actually – this raises another SV issue – they solve a problem for their region and then decide that it is a global issue and roll accordingly ….

This has nothing to do with the business model and everything to do with the specific business. There are at least a half dozen ride hailing services in London, from Addison Lee to Gett still available to Londoners.

  • Jim – I agree with so much of what you write – on this you are 100% wrong …Lyft – absolutely – it’s not them getting banned – it’s UBER – and about time ….

  • The free ride for businesses like this has ended. As good as they might be, there are regulations that must be followed (or changed and then followed). AirBnB has been skirting the regs for hotels for a while now and is also raising hackles. Bottom line now is your disruptive tech company is going to need a legal and politics division to make sure you’re complying with or getting change in current regs.

Good for London! As a city dweller, the suburban Lyft and Uber drivers have no idea where they are going and create hazards for other cars and pedestrians as they drive by watching their GPS. Licensed cabbies have to pass tests about how to find addresses, ride sharing companies let anyone sign up (particularly Uber).

Well, Uber is one of the greasiest companies on the planet. Don’t know about Lyft. The financial disaster that is represented by a decision to use one’s own car as a taxi under the Uber umbrella (most of the drivers do not have the tools or training to demonstrate this to themselves) lack of concern for drivers ‘welfare, reportedly poor treatment of its own employees, and proclivity for snooping on its users combine to help me understand the decision. Good.

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wonderful about Uber Jim. You’ve either had your eyes closed the last couple of years or simply chose to ignore the news. It’s a horribly sexist and racist culture, their labor is treated horribly (drivers), and they have consistently violated passenger privacy while endangering them with repeatedly lax security screenings for drivers. Oh, but you saved a couple of bucks catching a ride to the show so they’re great! No.

Lyft is much better as a company, but they still have significant issues with how they treat and reward the backbone of their company, the drivers.

Fascinating to see the state worshipping going on in the comments. Be good little statists, children!

So do you believe people should be able to operate with no regard to the law, to the harm they cause, to the harm they allow indirectly, to any ethical standards, and to be immune to any sort of sanction?

Or do you believe that only of rich people?

      Or only of corporations?
