Two things about this detailed chart of iOS beta releases since the days of iPhone OS:
1. The chart itself. Great work by Will Hains pulling this together. He’s been doing it for quite some time.
2. Yesterday’s iOS 11 beta 9 release was uncharted territory, the first iOS release to hit this lofty beta territory. So new, Will had to add a new color to the chart. Will iOS 11 hit a beta 10?
Fun chart, Will. Great job.
Gotta say its felt pretty stable and ready the last week or so.
At first glance I thought it was weird that it looked like iOS may have spent more time in beta than in release. But then I saw that the scales on the X axes are different. It seems to me they should be the same since we’re comparing apples with apples. I wonder what Edward Tufte would say.
How is this supposed to be significant?
It’s the only beta to go to 9? I guess it’s significant to Dave and Will anyway!
There are only 6 (original Apple logo colors) for the beta colors and the pattern repeats, there is no new color. Sorry for getting technical.
I find it interesting, but “uncharted territory” and such just adds drama where none is necessary. It’s interesting. That’s enough. 🙂
I do not disagree. Slow news day in tech. Everyone’s just sitting around and waiting for the 12th!
I can tell you that in all my years of development testing of macOS (OS X) and iOS versions, I’ve never come across any that were a unstable and as bug ridden as iOS 11 and High Sierra. There were significant changes to both, and they required a lot of work. I’m very happy that Apple has made to effort to put together as many releases as they have to work through all the problems. The difference between the latest builds and the first four or five is night and day.
It’s a pun. I’ll allow it.
He’d probably start with “What are you trying to say?” because whatever it is, I don’t think that graph answers it very well. I wonder what Junk Charts would do with that.
Objection! Your Honor’s assuming the witness is capable of punning!
I missed that. Though it’s now charted.
I’m always amazed how Apple pulls together these major releases. Going from an early buggy early beta to a stable release in a few short months on such a complex system is no mean feat.
