From a new Apple knowledge base article spotted by 512 Pixels:
When you upgrade to macOS High Sierra, systems with all flash storage configurations are converted automatically. Systems with hard disk drives (HDD) and Fusion drives won’t be converted to APFS. You can’t opt-out of the transition to APFS.
From everything I’ve heard, the transition to macOS High Sierra was easy and rock solid. But, even with that said, the transition of a file system makes it especially critical that you have a reliable, up-to-date backup of your Mac before you give High Sierra a try.
If you are planning a move to High Sierra, read the knowledge base post for specifics. It’s not long.
If an upgrade failed because of a file system switch to APFS, it would be the first time I’ve heard of it.
That’s interesting. My iMac with a fusion drive is APFS on the beta. I wonder if that’s a mistype and it means they won’t be converted “automatically.” I think the first time I did it I was prompted.

“Won’t be converted” or “won’t be converted automatically”? Can we override that and format HDDs and Fusion drives as APFS?
That must be what that document means, since a Developer FAQ exists which states:
“Can I use Apple File System with my existing hard disk drive?
“Yes. Apple File System is optimized for Flash/SSD storage, but can also be used with traditional hard disk drives (HDD) and external, direct-attached storage.”

And even though I imagine this will go flawlessly, I’ll be waiting a few days. Just in case. I have one Mac (a ’16 MBP) and need it for work.
So … to be clear. I backup my Macs internal SSD to Time Capsule (HDD). macOS High Sierra upgrades the Mac to APFS. What happens to the backup on the Time Capsule?

I hoping that we can use a certain string to connect to older SMB devices in APFS! I find SMB devices are SLOW in adopting newer SMB standards!
Betas will often act a little different than public releases. Or your thought is just off
OS updates fail for a lot of reasons, often due to corruption in the system. That could screw with this conversion as well. Thus the warnings for less savvy users who aren’t backing up all the time as a standard action
Mine did. MBPr13 Mid-2014. Restored from Time Machine, same thing… ? On reboot I ‘think’ it may have been Tuxera NTFS … But can’t be sure. First time this sort of upgrade failed for me.
