Apple CEO Tim Cook test-drove a device that tracks his blood sugar

Christina Farr, CNBC:

Tim Cook has been spotted at the Apple campus test-driving a device that tracks blood sugar, which was connected to his Apple Watch.

A source said that Cook was wearing a prototype glucose-tracker on the Apple Watch, which points to future applications that would make the device a “must have” for millions of people with diabetes — or at risk for the disease.

If Apple can crack this problem, a bloodless, continuous, glucose tracking Apple Watch, they’d help a lot of people, sell a ton of Apple Watches at the same time.

I also read somewhere that this might be built into the wristband, rather than the watch base, thus making it potentially available to current watch owners and segregating it as an option for those who really need it vs those who don’t.

Not everyone needs to monitor their blood sugar. The point of this is to give an alternative to people who do. This is a large market, obviously.

More importantly, pharma companies will give away their monitor device. They want you consuming their proprietary consumables. This could go far to deflating the extortion pharma extracts from diabetics all over the world.

I’ve learned recently that there are people now occasionally tracking their blood sugar that aren’t diabetics, to learn how different foods affect their systems. I think this is a very small group that’s into quantifying their bodies, but it seems it is a group that exists.

I’ve been fortunate to never pay for any blood meter I’ve had, you can usually get them for free at your endocronologist’s office, but your main point is correct: it’s the test strips that get you.

      • definitely — as a non diabetic but someone who doesn’t want to become one, i definitely want to track my blood sugar.

    fingers crossed

I just realized that, if this becomes a consumer-available thing, it’ll only be a matter of time until my Windows-only diabetic father-in-law calls me, asking for tech support with his new all-Apple rig. :/

    • Khürt L. Williams

Do you often provide tech support for medical devices?

      • Mo

Nope. But that Apple Watch it’ll run off isn’t exactly going to pair up with a six-year-old PC running Windows 7, is it?

        • Khürt L. Williams

And it won’t provide the assurances of my FDA certified blood glucose monitoring device either. For some of us, this isn’t about shiny toys.

          • Mo

            “For some of us”? Seriously?

Did I give you the impression that I was thinking of this as a fashion accessory for a geriatric with diabetes?
