It was a June day when I began my career as a national journalist. I stepped into the Detroit Bureau of The Wall Street Journal and started on what would be a long, varied, rewarding career. I was 23 years old, and the year was 1970. That’s not a typo.
So it seems fitting to me that I’ll be retiring this coming June, almost exactly 47 years later. I’ll be hanging it up shortly after the 2017 edition of the Code Conference, a wonderful event I co-founded in 2003 and which I could never have imagined back then in Detroit.
I didn’t make this decision lightly or hastily or under pressure. It emerged from months of thought and months of talks with my wise wife, my family, and close friends. It wasn’t prompted by my employer or by some dire health diagnosis. It just seems like the right time to step away. I’m ready for something new.
“Uncle Walt” as he was known (sometimes disparagingly) to many in the tech media has been around for a very long time. His retirement is hard earned and very well deserved. It’s doubtful his like will be ever seen again in the tech media. The “I’m ready for something new” is interesting. Don’t be surprised to see Mossberg turn up elsewhere in a management role at some Silicon Valley company.
I will miss his contribution, until or unless it reappears in some other role. More than anyone else, I feel he has succeeded at representing my voice in all of this (gestures around at tech atmosphere). I’ve enjoyed listening to him and Nilay Patel on “Control Walt Delete” very much. I wish him the best!
i suspect his “something new” refers to non-tech, enjoying retirement, etc.
personally i dont think being a tech writer is by itself or inherently qualification for managing a tech company. in his last couple years writing for the Verge i found Walt’s opinions and pieces questionable. sorry, but the exploding Samsung knockoff is not a better phone than Apple’s, as he claimed.
Walt’s been writing a long time. Now he’s gonna stop.

Mossberg did a lot of good writing, to be sure, and put some valuable pressure on hardware and software manufacturers to improve usability. Still, I can’t but remember that this is the self-styled technology writer who believes to this day that one must be a “programmer” to use the Reveal Codes feature in WordPerfect, doesn’t understand why it is useful, hasn’t noticed that similar functionality has been creeping into his beloved Microsoft Word for the last 5 versions, and doesn’t know that today’s Microsoft Word (2010) has finally reached functional equivalence [1] to WordPerfect for Windows 6.0 (circa 1994).
[1] MS Word being far more stable than WPfW, although even there in the 1990s that was due not only to WordPerfect’s incompetence in quality control but also because Microsoft was deliberately introducing changes into Windows designed to create instability in WordPerfect and Novell applications.
