I saw a tweet from David Lieb, Product Lead for Google Photos, showing off PhotoScan by Google Photos. I watched the video and thought, “Wow! This is going to be really cool for all of our moms and dads for all of those photos they have of us as kids!” I asked Lieb if they would eventually make it available for those of us who use an iPhone and he kindly and quickly replied, “Of course it is!” I went to the iOS App Store and, sure enough, it is. So grab it and install it on your mom’s iPhone.
Introducing PhotoScan by Google Photos
So long as I don’t have to be logged in to Google or upload them to Google Photos, I’m in! But I am looking at the App Store and I’m not seeing it. 🙁
Google Photos is truly one of the best things ever! It puts Apple’s icloud-photo-streams-whatever-it’s-called nonsense to shame, and makes my 16B phone actually just about usable! This looks like a nice bonus app ^_^
Just tried it, worked well. Very consistent results. I like:
1) It uses the flash to brighten the photo and over-ride any glare caused by interior/ceiling lights
2) It makes you take four photos which it seamlessly combines to create a higher-quality image than just taking a single shot.
3) You don’t have to press a single button after the first tap; you just keep scanning and it keeps saving and processing in the background. Very well thought-out given that the target use case of this app is bulk scanning.
I’m sure there will be those who just see it as more Google invasion, but I’m very much over that – embrace the future or get left behind 😉
I didn’t initially find it, either. Searching for “photoscan” yielded nothing. Searching for “photoscan google” found it. Go figure! 🙂
Charlie,
I prefer using Apple’s photo ecosystem. Can you send the scans where you like or are you required to use Google Photos?
Yep it saves the photos to your camera roll.
Thanks Charlie, I look forward to trying it out.
