Apple, in a statement given to Rene Ritchie:
Updating some iOS devices (iPhone 5s and earlier and iPad Air and earlier) to iOS 9.3 can require entering the Apple ID and password used to set up the device in order to complete the software update,” an Apple spokesperson told iMore. “In some cases, if customers do not recall their password, their device will remain in an inactivated state until they can recover or reset their password. For these older devices, we have temporarily pulled back the update and will release an updated version of iOS 9.3 in the next few days that does not require this step.”
There’s also a support article.
Glad I waited.
I stumbled through the upgrade process on three iPhones and two iPads and did see the activation lock screen at least once. I was odd, but luckily it was the current account and I didn’t get locked out. But, maybe folk are getting locked out even with the current account and the correct password?
I thought it was weird that I was prompted for it on my Air, but I knew what it was so it didn’t stop me.
I am noticing some weirdness with an email address in iMessages not showing the contact that it’s a part of.
My iPhone 5S is currently in purgatory because it was still associated with an iCloud account that has been deleted. I know the email and the password, but the account doesn’t exist any more…
I upgraded all of my devices successfully before the original iOS 9.3 was withdrawn. (And they’re all older devices.)
