Leo Laporte learns about Samsung’s elegant sense of design

This is just so very delicious. News of the amazing Galaxy Note 5 stylus design fail has been making its way around the blogosphere over the last few days. If you haven’t heard, Samsung’s latest and greatest, designed to take on the iPhone 6 (more on that in the follow-up post), was released in the US on August 21st.

One slight problem, though. As you’ll see in the video below, if you insert the stylus wrong way in (and that appears to be pretty easy to do, as Leo demonstrates), the stylus gets stuck, held in place by a mechanism inside the phone. If you remove the stylus by force, you’ll permanently damage the sensor.

  1. If I didn’t have such utter disrespect for Leo Laporte, I would feel bad for him, but there is not a bone in my body that likes this guy. Also, I don’t buy for a second that he didn’t do this on purpose.

  2. whatever about the guy.. but “didn’t do this on purpose”

of course it was.. that’s the point of the video. it’s so easy even a Leo can do it.

i think he was surprised at how easy it was.. but there’s no doubt the intent was to break it by the end of the video.

    besides, Andy.

  3. I’m not a Samsung fan but declaring someone should be fired, implying that people who work there are lower life forms (re the comment “a higher lifeform wouldn’t have designed this phone”) and worse still that their users as “morons” is unkind, ungracious and mean spirited.

Which is exactly what the criticism levelled at Apple during Antennagate etc was. But returning serve is simply schoolyard stuff.

    Very disappointing.

  4. I stopped watching Macbreak Weekly a long time ago, because Leo Laporte himself, the host of the damn show, really doesn’t even like Apple. Ihnatko no longer really likes Apple. Whatever random guest they get on usually just agrees with Leo so that they can be on the show again, and Rene Ritchie is the one lone person there that actually wants to talk about Apple in a civilized way. I honestly don’t know why they a) still have the show and b) don’t change the format/name to something else. They rarely give Apple a fair shake and spend most episodes slamming them.

  5. Andy and Leo don’t even really like Apple anymore. That show is really terrible these days. It’s the podcast version of anti-Apple clickbait all over the web.

  6. Why such hatred, dude? I’ve listened to Leo over the years. He’s more than fair about Apple — some folks just don’t like hearing any criticism about anything Apple.

Andy’s big problem for me is that he focuses too heavily on the cost/value of Apple products and because he’s such a cheap person, his opinion is often overly skewed based on this regardless of other factors. I’d love to read a review of his that didn’t include anything about the price.

  7. I also don’t find Leo to be anti-Apple at all. He’s critical, and I don’t always agree with him, but I still find the shows entertaining and informative overall. I’m glad they are bringing more new people in, like Kelly — that keeps them all on their toes.

I think a lot of people bring Leo’s personal life or his Type-A personality running the business side of things into their opinions a bit too much.

  8. I think their comments about “You’re holding it wrong” show clearly that they didn’t give quarter to Apple, either, during the antenna issue. In fact, it is just that kind of criticism that has others here claiming Leo and friends are Apple haters now. The thing is, if they didn’t criticize, then they would be called sycophants. Damned one way or the other.

Also, considering the “moron” statement was said in jest by Leo about himself and how he’d learned his lesson not to think that of others in this case, I think you’re taking that a bit over the top.

  9. Well, I don’t know how it is now because I haven’t watched the show in years, but before I quit watching, Macbreak Weekly was no longer an appropriate title. Every week I would turn it on, and it would be a straight hour of bashing. Maybe they’ve changed things since then, but I prefer news and commentary, not haterage the whole hour. Be adults.

  10. “[…] and worse still that their users as “morons” […]”

Leo didn’t say that Samsung users are morons. He said when he first heard the story he felt you’d have to be a moron to put the stylus in backwards — which was also the prevalent response from Samsung fans online: “Don’t be an idiot and put it in backwards” (and really, Samsung’s later, official response too) — but after actually trying trying it he realized that it was a far too easy mistake to make. That there’s no resistance to putting the stylus in backwards and that it’s a serious design flaw that results in physical damage to the phone.

  11. Leo is completely anti Apple and incompetent. Last time I listened to his show he was complaining that you couldn’t do a full restore from a Time-Machine backup (when in fact you could).

  12. Petulant is a good word. And how much of that is actually just part of stating various things to get more out of the various guests? Even then, he’s much less of a grump than John Dvorak or Jerry Pournelle, when they show up on This Week in Tech. Dvorak’s schtick turned me off in the early 90s.

  13. It’s not just repeating subjects. It’s also a bit of stirring up shit where none exists. Leo understands Dvorak’s Law.

  14. Uhoh! It’s I’M NOT WATCHING HIM BUT I KNOW HE IS AN EVIL ASSHOLE BUT I’M NOT GOING TO WATCH HIM HE’S AN ASSHOLE.

Duhhuh. If you don’t have anything to say that you can corroborate with fact or reference PLEASE TAKE A HIKE!

  15. his little fit about ‘podcasts’ and ‘net casts’ pretty much sums it up. He over-reacts (or over-acts) to the point of annoyance, but I still listen.

Though some days he gets to be a bit much. He does go out of his way to bash the iPhone it seems like.

  16. sorry but ‘holding it wrong’ with regards to signal strength and ‘holding it wrong’ with regards to physically damaging a device is a bit different to me.

  17. Not really. Did you hear them say Samsung responded that people should read the manual for the proper way to insert the stylus? “Holding it wrong” when the antenna is affected and “inserting it wrong” when you can put the stylus in with no force and in any orientation and likely get it stuck are the same thing: blaming users for a design flaw.

  18. Like others have noticed MacBreak Weekly jumped the shark a long time ago. I jumped to alternatives just after Steve died! Leo and Andy are just a tools that goes for anything the new anymore.
