Fuck off Kanye

Kanye talking to Oxford students:

“I love Steve Jobs, he’s my favourite person, but there’s one thing that disappoints me. When Steve passed he didn’t give the ideas up. That’s kinda selfish. You know that Elon’s like ‘yeah, take these ideas’. Maybe there are companies outside of Apple that could work on them and push humanity forward. Maybe the stock brokers won’t like that, the stock holders wouldn’t like that idea, but ideas are free and you can’t be selfish with them.”

What a moron.

  1. Chill out, Keith.

Telling the beard to chill out isn’t the same as “Fuck off.” It’s just saying “take it easy there, guy.”

  2. Chill out, Jack, ain’t nothing not no gonna be wrong with nothing that none said ain’t not gonna not like it…

  3. lol, Chill out, Chilly. (Are we doing this now? Is this a thing?)

In your haste, you may have included and extra negative or eleven.

  4. The title is mighty obnoxious for a sentiment that is so interesting. What if great leaders didn’t die with their fantastic ideas? That is Kanye’s point. Your point is seemingly empty. You don’t like Kanye? Neat.

  5. The nice thing about ideas is if they’re not patented someone is is free to have the same idea on their own.

If they are patented, it gets more complicated. But ultimately that idea, more manifested, slips into what people are allowed to build.

So did Steve Jobs have unique ideas, or just a lot of ideas? Did he “selfishly” patent all the unique ideas, in such a way that we’ll get to use them in the future? And the only real answer is: Fuck off, that’s not your business. Start with your own ideas.

  6. Only someone who is famous for taking other people’s ideas, like song lyrics and melodies, then mixing them up and repackaging them, would say “ideas are free”…sure, cause he doesn’t actually come up with his own.

  7. Kanye’s quote above shows he believes that ideas have implicit value in and of themselves, and that ideas themselves have the power to change the world. But ideas alone are almost entirely valueless without action, and it is the way people act on ideas that changes the world.

Kanye makes it sound like the world has lost out because Steve Jobs didn’t share enough, but if we’ve lost out due to his death, it’s because he’s no longer here doing things he would have done.

  8. How does anyone know what, if anything, Steve Jobs took to the grave? Maybe he shared his best ideas with guys like Jony and Tim before he passed away. Maybe some of those ideas were great. Maybe they were all terrible.

  9. I agree so hard. How about any engagement with the idea rather than saying Kanye is a “moron”? By the way, whatever anyone thinks of Kanye West, he’s one of the lyrical greats of our time, so calling him a moron is more revealing about the name-caller than Kanye.

  10. Musk does not share patents because he is such a great person (maybe he IS a great person, too, but that is then unrelated). In international car sales they are a flat zero, and the more the big guys would bring their proprietary solutions – and I am mainly talking about public recharging points/stations here – into existence, the harder it would become for Tesla to survive. Same goes for repair/service equipment, repair/maintenance staff qualification and many other things. The BMWs, Toyotas etc of this world have their networks, their lobbying etc. in place, Tesla is decades and billions of $ away from that. Making others use your technology / patents is a clever way to deal with that to some degree.

Comparing that to a dead person’s actions, which were based on completely different premises, is moronic.

  11. I haven’t read the article, but what you quoted from him sounds a lot more sensible than moronic. Just saying…

  12. so, it’s OK for you to be critical of another person’s opinion of another person, but it’s not OK for that person to critical of another person.

    “Rrrriiiiight…..”

  13. There’s no way you got that from anything I actually said.

    So… yeah. Good day.

  14. bingo. take note fellas, this guy gets it.

ideas are cheap — they are free and mostly worthless. it’s the implementation of an idea that holds value.

my idea: “cheap jetpacks that are easy to use for everybody”. great idea. but it’s worthless, because it doesnt show how to actually, you know, do it. thats why ideas arent worth much until you implement them.

jobs had plenty of ideas, some turned out great, some were dumb and never made it out the door. but the notion that he hoarded all his good ideas, effectively “holding back humanity” is the dumbest idea ive heard all day.

  15. Moron, as in “stupid” seems appropriate regards Kayne’s comments. Fuck off simply means, thanks but no thanks in Jim speak… Steve Jobs died, not Apple. And Apple is made of many many brilliant people. Give away the store (or farm)? Why? Just dumb.

  16. Big difference between being outspoken/egotistical/sometimes dickish and being a moron. He’s musically brilliant and clearly a brilliant business man too. I suppose it’s possible to have the level of success he has without much intelligence, but not in the way he’s had it – as a singer/song writer and self-crafted persona. I don’t understand how someone like him is written off so flippantly as a “moron” of all things.

  17. I think it’s more likely that Kanye believes there are people still alive who could execute those ideas in a fashion comparable or even better than Jobs could have.

  18. in the recent New Yorker article Ive shares that Jobs had some dopey ideas, and some good ones. that he would often preface w/, “So I’ve got this dopey idea….What if we…”

  19. Critical: “Here’s why I don’t agree with this: reason x, reason y, reason z. You see, that’s why this person is wrong about this.”

Hateful: “Fuck off. What a moron.”

  20. steve jobs hoarded his ideas to himself like Smog and his gold, thusly holding the human race back — that sounds sensible? thats really what youre saying?

  21. …In no way did the words he use add up to anything like what you just typed.

Is this a recurring problem for you?

  22. “Ideas are free.” How many lawyers does West have on retainer to protect his work? What’s his history regarding other artists who sample him?

He’s one of the reasons why there’s a lucrative business in PR work that attempts to keep high-profile celebrities from appearing foolish in public.

  23. I think kyron’s point is that Steve Job’s ideas aren’t some unique thing that have been lost.

    To repeat:

“the notion that he [Steve Jobs] hoarded all his good ideas, effectively “holding back humanity” is the dumbest idea ive heard all day.”

  24. (I wasn’t replying to Kyron)

But again, Kanye didn’t say Steve hoarded his good ideas. He also didn’t say that humanity was being held back. So the dumbest thing Kyron has heard all day is something he came up with himself.

  25. Exactly. We still have no idea whether Steve shared all of the good ones with anyone before he died. Every great mind dies with something they never shared. What did Einstein take to the grave with him? Tesla? Edison?

  26. It sounds like we can agree on this: from the quote in the post, it sounds like Kanye believes that ideas have some kind of intrinsic value.

I think that every idea Steve Jobs ever had has also been thought of by someone else. I don’t think good ideas, even great ideas, are a rare commodity. To tie back into Zachary’s comment, I don’t think it’s their ideas that makes great leaders great.

I don’t think it’s for their ideas that we truly miss people, even great people, when they die. I think it’s what they might have done that we mourn for. The time we might have had with them.

  27. I read West’s speech. Context was difficult to ascertain. The article’s writer seemed inclined to praise him.

  28. No, it’s a sophomoric thought. It also ignores the fact that Tesla is a private company that Musk controls and Apple a public one. Jobs couldn’t unilaterally give away confidential ideas without it violating his fiduciary duty and for those ideas Apple was working on, it would have hurt the company he’s built.

    Kanye’s a fucking idiot.

  29. Because what Kanye said made no fucking sense, and sounded like he was drunk, so there’s no point engaging it in a serious or intellectual way. Was he suggesting that Jobs should have burned all of Apple’s patents before he died? Is that really a serious question?

  30. “OK, everyone please be completely quiet, because I can literally hear a whisper, and it’ll throw off my stream of consciousness, and when I get my stream of consciousness going that’s when I give the best, illest quotes. Literally, a whisper can throw it off….”

—- I’mma gonna let him finish, but I think Train_of_Thought should have won for best music video, since its the illestest!!!

  31. The inverse of people taking Jobs’ ideas and “pushing humanity forward” is holding humanity back. Duh. You’re grasping at straws, foolio.

  32. Nope, just idiotic thought from others. It is exactly what Kanye said – he was disappointed in jobs for not sharing his golden ideas, which could have pushed humanity forward. Moronic.

  33. Ok. And the inverse of 1 is -1. That doesn’t mean that if something isn’t 1, it has to be -1. You’re trying to win an argument that only you’re participating in, handsome.

  34. I’m pretty sure nobody in these comments is even reading Kanye’s meaning correctly. He’s not talking about Steve Jobs “passing” in the sense of passing away, but in the sense of passing on a project or potential creation. Apple makes a thousand “no” choices for every “yes”, and West is saying Jobs should have given the best of those “no” ideas to the world, comparing it to Musk’s release of patents.

I don’t think he’s actually completely accurate in his understanding of Musk’s motives (and Apple has given some things to the world as well, e.g. Webkit), but people could at least talk about his actual point.

I also don’t think “Fuck off Kanye” is a very measured or useful response.

  35. This usage doesn’t fit any definition of “accurate” that I’m aware of. An imperative can’t be “accurate.” Nice try.

  36. Considering Kanye’s predilection to interrupt other people’s moments in order to defend a lady who can fully well defend herself if she even felt the need to, I think “Fuck off, Kanye” is a perfect response.

  37. Wow – Not too many people are as polarizing as Kanye. He’s really, really good at getting people to talk about him. I think if you can’t stand the guy, don’t post about him. He loves all the attention and you’re giving it to him.

  38. He’s not talking about Steve Jobs “passing” in the sense of passing away, but in the sense of passing on a project or potential creation.

Jesus Tap Dancing Christ. Jobs has been dead for over three years. Of course he was speaking of him in the past tense. Because while Jobs was alive, Jobs passed on his ideas every single time he hit the stage to present a product or to do an interview. So neither interpretation can be used to put Kanye’s statement in a charitable light.

Apple’s products for almost 35 years reflected Steve Jobs ideas of what personal computing should look like. Steve Jobs set up the apparatus of Apple to get his ideas and the ideas of his stable of talent into the real world. What’s the implication here? That Kanye thinks Jobs was a fountain of wizard juice that would have changed the world if only Jobs had shared?

Jobs did change the world. He did share his ideas. Every single day and in a variety of ways.

Either Kanye is utterly ignorant of who Jobs was and what he did or Kanye is utterly ignorant of how “ideas” work. I’d love to hear an attempt to shoehorn Kanye’s statement into some framework that squares with reality.

  39. Who said he wasn’t talking about him in the past tense? I’m not even saying Kanye’s point is a good one (it isn’t), just that people are misinterpreting it in their rush to misjudgment.

  40. So tired of hearing about “Khan-yay,” and his idiotic statements. And now he’s a slavery denier???
