iStumbler is the leading wireless discovery tool for Mac OS X, providing plugins for finding AirPort networks, Bluetooth devices, Bonjour services and Location information with your Mac.

This is a great wireless utility that I’ve used for years. I met the developer, Alf Watt, shortly after I started using the software and he’s a terrific guy.

It was always free but now they charge for it? $20 no less. Maybe for less then $10 but $20 seems just like a slap in the mouth.

When I started iStumbler more than 10 years ago, it was my first Mac OS X app and I didn’t feel that I could charge for it.

After ten years of providing it as a free, open source project, I really wanted to spend some more time on this app and develop some others, charging for iStumbler allows me to do this and support my family.

There are lots of other Wi-Fi scanning apps today, but iStumbler is still the only tool that give you Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bonjour and Location all in one app.

I much prefer WiFi Explorer, on the Mac App Store, and only £1.99 (under US$ 3.5)

WiFi [sic] Explorer is a great tool and Adrian has done a really good job on it.

Unfortunately, due to the sandboxing policy, all Wi-Fi apps in the App Store are stuck and cannot add any new features, since they can’t currently be sandboxed.

If WiFi Explorer does everything you need, then it’s a much more affordable product and you’re welcome to use it. If you want the extra features that iStumbler offers you’re welcome to try them out for free before you purchase.
